Backstory: FH is was a music major in college so I say "sure honey, you can handle the music" and left it to him.

    Hoo boy.

Today as I was putting together my vendor list for the caterer, I ask FH what the name of the ceremony music company is. He says the SoAndSo Ensemble. I look on the internets, said ensemble is nowhere to be found.

I ask him if they have a website and he links me to the violinists personal .mac.com homepage. She mentions the SoAndSo Ensemble but when I go to look at the gallery, there are only pictures of her there.

I ask the FH where the rest of the ensemble is, he says "I assume she just hires them."

    ...

I check out WeddingWire for some reviews of this person, nothing, zip, zilch, nada.

I ask FH if he asked her about her experience, if she's ever done a wedding before. He didn't. Then gets all pissy at me because I'm wondering how the heck we're supposed to be sure this "ensemble" that really isn't an ensemble is going to show up and do well on our wedding day. I half expect this person to either run off with the money he's given her already or just show up on the wedding day by herself because she couldn't throw together a real ensemble.

    Ugh.

I always get nervous when people have no reviews or like one super good review (which implies to me the vendor posted it).  I agree with you that I'd feel more comfortable with someone I can actually find information on.

I feel that you should just audition them! Maybe they are very talented and just starting out.  As a musician myself I feel like its great to help out aspiring musicians, also they would be much cheaper for your budget.  However, it would definitely not be unreasonable to ask for a recording of what they plan to perform or a live audition.
