Oh. That's a tough one. Soudns like it would be beautiful.
For some reason astroturf came to mind, but that wouldnt be very pretty. Perhaps astroturf with a aisle runner on top of it?? Hmm.
Would it be possible if you and the groom and officiant only to have to walk and have microphones?
Maybe if you posted a picture of what you mean by "the river bar" cause I'm not exactly sure what you mean -- could help others suggest things!
Thanks HB. Not a bad idea...astroturf. It gets me thinking outside the box. I uploaded a picture of the actual river bar. Guests would sit in a cresent formation towards the trees and the altar would be right at the river's edge. Guests have to walk down the path to the river bar. Maybe a logistical nightmare, but now I'm so in love with the idea that I have to figure out a way to make it happen!
We're doing a wooded ceremony where guests are going to have to walk about .5 miles and then stand.
I think if you tell people the plan and to dress appropriately, you're fine. We're including a seperate insert in our invites of "things to consider" 1) How far they'll be walking 2) wear comfortable shoes 3) standing ceremony. That way they can make the choice of whether or not to come and they won't be surprised.
Oh that's waaay better then I expected! I was expecting a crazy flowing river!
What about doing what a lot of people do and offer flip flops in a basket at the top of the "walkway" I know you can get the for super cheap, not sure where but I know some Bees have done it so just search for it up there in the upper right hand corner.
Also could you bring in sand? Sounds silly but if you made an aisle with brought in sand it might make it a little more smooth.
Or -- what abuot barefoot? Are they sharp rocks or smoothed by the river? that could be cute too!
What a beautiful ceremony site!
I agree with the idea that you could prepare the guests ahead of time by letting giving them the information in the invitation. We're having our ceremony/reception outside, too, so we're planning to communicate this to our guests so that the women won't be sinking into the grass all night with their heels -- unless of course they want to!
Great ideas! Thanks for your help :) We're planning to give our guest an idea of how "rugged" the terrain will be. I've already been telling people I wouldn't recommend heals. Maybe we'll have some flip flops on hand for those that don't want to trek the rocks in the shoes they brought.
I think the flip flops and recommending "sensible" shoes via word of mouth and your wedding website are both great ideas. I hope you'll post pictures if you end up doing this. Sounds like it will be really beautiful! :)
Ooh, and another thought, depending on how much time and manpower you have, could be to construct a sort of "catwalk" for your guests. When I worked in the theatre, we built platforms and the like several times and it's really not hard at all. You can usually go into a store like Lowe's or Home Depot and ask around a little to find someone who can help you draw up a plan and tell you what you need to execute it.
It could be painted in one of your wedding colors or with your monogram, and it could really be kind of quirky and stylish. Just be sure to assign someone to take it away so that it doesn't litter that beautiful riverbed!

My FH and I want our ceremony to be on the river bar. I love the idea, but I'm worried that people will struggle to walk on the rocks in dress shoes. I'm trying to think of some sort of isle runner that could mitigate any high heals vs. river rocks mess. Does anyone have any suggestions?
