We are both 34 and this is our second marriage. I have a 9 year old son, he has none. His family lives in 2 distant states, Mine are nuts to say the least.
So… We have decided to get married with just an officiant as we do not want to go to a courthouse, the one here is pretty dismal. Would it be weird to hire an officiant and have no guests? I only want my son with us.
Has anyone done this and how did it turn out? I was thinking about sneaking into a botanical garden as some places charge a venue fee but it will just be the 4 of us and a photographer!

I haven’t done it, but your idea sounds sweet. I’m not sure I would go outlaw by not getting a permit/paying a ceremony fee because I would feel so awkward getting caught. Imagine a ceremony getting interrupted or something! But maybe if you talked to your desired spot ahead of time, they might be willing to reduce the fee for such a small number of people.

KarenMPW: That’s what we did. Actually, where we got married had stopped conducting ceremonies in the courthouse and instead assigned you a marriage officer who married you wherever you told them to meet you. We would have been fine getting married in the courthouse, but outside turned out really nice. What I would add though is to make sure you double check about any witness requirements. We found ours on the day (two were required in our case), and no we didn’t know them from Adam!

No, I don’t think it would be weird at all… I think it’s terribly romantic! I agree with a PP- you will need to check out legal requirements for a witness. Best of luck with your wedding!
