What website are you looking at? No website that I know of can actually make all those changes for you. For place like SSC and the DMV you HAVE to go in person, there's just no way around it. The sites where you usually pay $30 just help you pre-fill out some of the forms you need to take with you.
it was miss to mrs. I'm not sure of all the things that you need to change but it said license change and ssc change. Maybe it is only the forms to fill out and take with you you like you said.
You will still have to pay at each place too. The site only fills out the forms for you, basically you give them all your info then they put it in the right boxes and you print out the pages and take them to the right places. Even if you pay that 30 bucks you will stll have to pay for a new licenses and SSC to be printed , and a new passport to be processed and sent to you.
Oh see, I paid for that service and honestly I wasted my $$. Shoot, they couldn't even fill out a DMV form for me, I had to do it at the DMV. I personally would say to just keep the $30 in your pocket.
I just went to the social security office, you don't need to pay them to change your name. You can do it online, but I wanted to make sure that it was done right and get the receipt of the change immediately, so I went to the office to do it. You can get the social security forms online at the social security web site. I filled mine out in advance and brought them with me. As for the DMV, you might be able to do that online also but use your local DMV web site to get the information; don't trust another web site to give it to you.
The only thing I had to pay for was a new license. Everything else was free, unless you count stamps.
I changed at my bank in person and they charged a fee (without telling me) to issue a new ATM card but I called them and they removed it. I didn't get new checks.
The SS card and credit card replacements were free, and honestly pretty easy. You should be fine without paying for a service to help you with the paperwork. I made a few phone calls, sent off a few letters, but nothing was too difficult for me to figure out on my own.
I haven't gotten a new passport yet, I know there is a fee for that. I think I want to wait until my current one expires and I'm not sure I'm going abroad just yet.
The miss now mrs website only fills out the forms for you - you still have to take care of it all in person.
I'm starting this process now. I think I'm just going to go to the indivudal places instead of paying the $30 since in CA you have to go in person to SSA etc.
The only thing I had to pay was $30 at the DMV (and $$ to get the copy of the license to actually change my name) SSA didnt cost anything and I havent done my passport yet, which I know will cost money.
UGH. I wish I'd done this months ago. Now my driver's license is expring tomorrow and I have to go through the whole process in one day, which means waiting in three lines (to get the marriage abstract, change the name on the SS card, and DL) ON MY BIRTHDAY! BLECH.
Aww bunny, that stinks, I hope you'll be lucky and it will end up going quickly for you! I was in a rush when I did mine, too. I proscrastinated because I wasn't sure what I wanted my new name to be.
I'm just starting to do this, thanks for posting that using a company is a waste of time, rather handle things myself that way I know they are done right.. haha... I hate middle men. In theory it sounds good but probably more of a hastle.
The only things you need to pay to change your name on are the drivers license and passport. If you have time, I would change your name yourself instead of buying one of those services. It didn't take too much time for me to change my name on everything, just a few months to get the time to get everything changed.
@Br1tSh1n1ngStar: I wouldn't say the site was a hassle, it is a good idea, in theory. But, the time I took to type in all my information for all the different companies e.g. banks, credit cards, etc. took so much time and after the first one I just figured I could do it myself, and I did! When I found out I couldn't even get the DMV form online I thought to myself, if this doesn't even have all the forms I need, why bother? So, if I could have gone back, I would have used the $30 to fill up my tank of gas in my car, lol.
I just looked into the passport process because we're taking our honeymoon later and i wanted to figure out which name I should book our plane tickets under. If you got your passport over 1 year ago, you have to pay the $75 to get one with your new name.
Just an FYI, you do have to change your name on your driver's license/state ID card at the actual office. They have to take a new picture too so be prepaired for that (I wasn't!) ~this may just be an Illinois thing though....not sure! Also, just bring EVERYTHING with you to each place. You don't want to stand in line the figure out you are missing something.
I also had to take a new picture at the DMV in CA! My passport stuff I was able to completely handle through the mail, so it was great!
So far I haven't had to pay for anything-except for a stamp to get extra copies of my marriage certificate. My DL expires in December so I'm waiting until then so I only have to pay for it once. Otherwise, it's been a very easy, painless process. I was actually in and out of our Social Security office in 15 minuts-I love living in a rural area!
The only things I paid for were:
$15 for a copy of our marriage license
$6.50 for a new license
$75 for a new passport- and
$8 for new passport pictures.
All in all it was pretty painless. SS was the thing I was dreading the most but I filled out the paperwork online, printed it out and brought it with me so it turned out to be the easiest!!
p.s. I also had to take a picture for my new license. They said new name = new picture.... so be prepared!

Does anyone know how much it costs to change your name? I am trying to decide if I want to do it all online or not. The website I want to do it on charges $30 for dmv, ssc and passport. Does it cost anything to go to each place and get it done in person?
