Our “BIG” day is in 38 Days. And I need advice on how to change my last name & advice on what I need to change. Can it be changed before you get married? I’ve heard that changing your last name is a BIG headache and takes a lot of time. So I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row before I jump into this.

In the US, it can be changed pretty painlessly after you are legally married with just your marriage certificate.
You may have to do the same thing several times for the differnt forms of legal ID you have. Here is a quick guide:

You just need your marriage certificate. It wasn’t hard at all.

It wasnt hard to do. My biggest problem was remembering everything I needed to change my name on. The only things I actually needed my marriage certificate for was social security, my drivers license and bank account. All my credit cards and other accounts I just called and told them my new name.

It wasn’t really hard, I just needed my marriage certificate, except to change my drivers license, with that I needed 2 pieces of mail with my name on it too because I changed my address. It was kind of annoying because different places require different things, some you have to go in person and some you need to mail them a copy of the certificate, you just have to research online what you need to do.

Yes, it’s easiest to wait until after you’re married. You’ll want to get your certified copy of the marriage license first, and then you can go to SS, the DMV, your bank, and wherever else you need to change it. I thought it was going to be a hassle too, but it honestly wasn’t that bad. I would suggest making a list of all the places you need to change it now, so you have time to think and add as you go. I also looked up how the name change process is handled at each place you need to change it so you don’t have to go searching for that info when you’re ready to start.

If you are going on a honeymoon right away, be sure to book your travel in your maiden name, and wait to start the name changing process until you return. You can, and likely will be denied boarding if your ID/passport does not match your tickets.
