Changing my name after the wedding. Do I need my old SS card?

@Beachy0404:  All I needed was my paperwork and a certified copy of marriage certificate (license? Is it the same thing?). In NC, you have to wait around two weeks to make sure that your officiant has filed your license and it has been sent to the right clerk’s office. You then need a certified copy which can be picked up at the clerk’s office or you can send in for one.

My marriage license got lost in the mail and we had to go to our clerk’s office to get a reprint, send it to our witnesses (DH’s parents) who sent it to our officiant who then sent it on to the clerk’s office. It took around six weeks after our wedding to get all that done. I got married on April 27 but did not go to the SS office until July 2nd because their hours are terrible and I didn’t have time. I got my license updated a little more than a week later.

So to answer your question, if you live in NC then no, you cannot get things started before you leave for your honeymoon because everything might not be filed yet. You can go online though to get the paperwork, fill it out, and print it off.

Good luck and congrats!

No, you don’t need it. You need: your marriage license, driver’s license/ID/passport, and your birth certificate. I think you’re okay hitting up the SS to change your name there before, since you just need your ID when you fly.

@MRSsrm85:  Oh duh, obviously you have to wait until your license is filed and sent back. Disregard what I said, haha.

It looks like you should be able to use your birth certificate to prove you are a citizen (asking with your drivers license as proof of identity).

I don’t think you’ll be able to change it that quickly. We weren’t able to get a certified copy of our marriage certificate until 10 days after the wedding. Since that is needed for the social security card name change I had to wait almost two weeks.

@Beachy0404:  I did all my name change stuff the day after the wedding (we got married on a Sunday). DMV first, then straight to the social security office. It was all done in less than 4 hours. All you need is a certified copy of your marriage certificate (we took it to the courthouse and they certified it right then) and your new license from DMV or whatever confirmation they give you after you’ve changed your name

Yes.  And they will take your old social security card from you at the SS place.

@Beachy0404:  No you don’t need your old SS card to change your name.  I had also lost mine. You might need to bring more documentation with you though to prove citizenship, I can’t remember though.

You need a copy of your marriage certificate (which your officiant files after the wedding) and you may or may not have that before you leave for your honeymoon. (Our officiant filed it on Monday and we had to wait a few days for it to be processed before a copy was available to us but that may be different in every state) I’d just wait til you get back.  It only took 3 days or so for my new social security card to arrive.

I am confused… Do you need your birth certificate or will a copy of my Marriage license, new DL Application, and an old (but still current) Passport work??

@Starling13:  I did not need my birth certificate. All they asked for was a certified copy of my marriage license and I believe some form of ID.

@Beachy0404:  You can probably get the process started before your honeymoon but I wouldn’t stress myself out over it. We’re going on our honeymoon 3 days after the wedding but I’m not starting the name changing process until we get back. And no, you don’t need your SS card.

@Beachy0404:  I didn’t have mine but they did ask for it.  When I asked if that was a problem, he just told me to go home and destroy it.
