Now I feel even better because no one has responded to my vent. Awesome. Yes, I know I'm being a whiny pathetic bitch but it's one of those days and I'm seriously pmsing.
Ugh, terrible! I hope things go more smoothly after the inital few government things.
Originally, I wasn't going to change my name. For a few weeks after the wedding, I had some second thoughts about changing it. Then, I had to book a few works trips and OMG, I will never legally change my name. All I could think of was just how much stuff I would have to change and when would I ever have a few months sans travel to get everything changed at once.
Don't you have to go in person to change your name with social security? If I could have done it through the mail I'm going to be so pissed.
Check out missnowmrs.com to see if there's info for you to be able to do this more smoothly
@LGenz: You can do it by mail but you have to mail in all the original documents (birth certificate, marriage license, whatever). I don't want to mail my drivers license so they have a list of other things you can use to prove identity like medical record, native american tribal record, etc.
@SarahSmilesDec28: Yeah I hear you on that. I thought about leaving my name as my maiden name legally and "going" by my married name but I started a photography business shortly after we got married as a sole proprietor with my maiden name and I want to switch to an LLC with the right name and it's a little mini nightmare!
@MrsElopement: Is that to legally change your name with social security? Or just to change it with like credit cards, magazines, etc.
Oh god, going to social security was the worst. I tired to go before a dentist appointment at 1pm, so I got there at like 1030, thinking 2.5 hours HAD to be enough. When I got there it was looking good, only like 10 numbers ahead of me. Yeah... at 12:45pm, there was STILL 3 people in front of me in over 2 HOURS they had taken care of 7 people. There was 2 people working the front desk, and 1 person coming from a back office... 3 people wokring couldnt get through 10 people in 2hours.. I was LIVID, I called up my husband just screaming like a mad person and told him this was it. (Patience not my strong suit). He tried to calm me down and told me we can come back later, and I told him there was no way I was coming back to this shit hole office and I'm not wasting another freaking day coming here (40 minute drive) and I'm not changing my name, I dont care, blah blah, and that I am going to my denist appointment. The only way I am changing my name was if he got his ass down there TODAY and pulled a number to wait while I was at my appointment. Love the man, he did come down, pull a number and sit there, and I returned another 2 hours later, and STILL had to wait 30 minutes to finally get it done. It only took me 15 minutes once I was in there too.. so I dont know what the hell they were doing before. *rant and reliving that awful experience over*
Wow 4 and a half hours! That's insane, that must be a completely rural office!

Oh wow. This is why small towns are a wonderful thing, I went yesterday and only spent 20 minutes there! OP, I am sorry you are having such a hard time with it!!
I think the website does it all but I'm not 100% because I haven't done it yet

Just needed to vent a bit...I put off changing my last name because I'm lazy and now that I'm finally trying to do it, I'm already so over the whole process. I went and got my birth certificate then drove to social security...there was a freaking line out the door because you have to wait to be patted down one by one to even enter the office...which smells like feet and fried chicken. Then you have to wait to check in and get a number. After waiting for 20 minutes I decided I'd rather try to mail in my app and just go home and get some things done instead of wasting all day waiting in the office. One of the things the clerk told me I could send in as proof of identity instead of my drivers license (which I obviously can’t mail out if I want to drive) was a medical record signed by someone in my dr’s office. I called my doctor’s office today and the receptionists acted like they didn’t know what I was talking about, why would I need that, they don’t just give that stuff out, etc, etc. They just wouldn’t let me finish my sentences to explain what I needed and said there was no way for one of them to certify the documents for me. So basically it looks like I have to go back to the social security office once again to wait to get patted down then wait to wait in line. Oh and it’s the end of the month so I’m sure it will be busy.
