I have a conundrum and need advice.
I’m currently a health journalist who has been writing professionally using my maiden name for 10 years. I legally changed my name to my husband’s name last summer when we got married.
However, I recently decided to go back to school to become a nurse. Because it is a credentialed field, my professional name and my legal name have to be the same. I’m not sure that I want to use my husband’s name anymore legally because I have built a professional reputation under my maiden name. He’s obviously disappointed, but he understands and supports me using the name that makes the most sense.
My question is… is it possible to change my name back to my maiden name WITHOUT being divorced! All the resources I’ve found on going back to your maiden name require a divorce decree. But we want to stay married!
How does someone go about switching their married name back to their maiden name?
And of course, if anyone has any info if I can be credentialled under my married name but use my maiden name professionally, please let me know. As far as I know, you have to be listed under the name you’re credentialled, and you have to be credentialled under your legal name.
