SS is the first step.

This doesn’t quite answer your question, but I thought it was worth mentioning that my bank let me change my name with my marriage license. Haven’t changed SS yet.

Once you go to the SS office the whole process is pretty easy. You will automatically get a piece of paper which you can bring to the RMV, I went to both offices on the same day and within a week had a new SS card and a new license and from there it was just making a list and changing my name where it was needed.

Yes, SS is definitely the first step.  I live in IL too and they won’t change your driver’s license until your social security number is changed.  It took me about 15 mins at the office and was way more convenient than mailing everything in and waiting.

I am pretty sure it depends on your state. I did SS first because they give back the marriage certificate copy but Pennsylvania DMV doesn’t. Logistically iy made sense since that way I needed to pay for less total copies. However nobody at DMV needed to see the SS paperwork.

SS first 🙂 You’ll need that to do everything else. Good luck!

I had to do SS first and then wait 24 hours before I could go to the DMV. It seems my state is on an old computer system that is not interconencted and must be updated overnight. SO much for my idea of being efficient and gettign it all done at once.

I went to the RMV and just told them I had applied for the name change with the SSA (which I had an hour earlier), and they took my word for it. I had the license before the new SSN card.  That was in MA.

I actually had problems getting my name updated with the SSA and it took over 2 months. When I called the SSA office, they told me it didn’t really matter anyway and I could just go ahead and change my name on everything else.

I went into the SS office in person, but I had to wait for my new card to get mailed to me.  I did, however, get a paper stating that I had changed my name, so I used that to change my drivers license, and with the bank.

I’m still in the process of switching my name over on my loans and credit cards, though.  That’s a pain to copy all the paperwork and send it out… so I’ve been avoiding it. 😉

Your ss number DOES NOT change!!!! Please don’t think or tell people that, because that is absolutely wrong. That doesn’t even make sense – how would they be able to track all your credit info under a new number?? Your driver license number changes but thats it

SS is done first, and you can’t do the DMV and SS in the same day, you have to wait until at least the next day to go to the DMV

I did SS, then DMV, then bank accounts, then everything else!

I went to DMV first and they said they could do it once without going to SS first, they just did a simple override. It could be different in a different state but I did DMV and SS the same day. DMV just printed out a sheet of paper saying that I had been there and that I already applied for a new license, got my new card in less  than a week!  Bank info is a pain! lol Good luck!!! 🙂
