My parents gave me both of their names when I was born. So my full "Name" is Sally Suzy Last name1-last name 2. when I went to school I only needed to put last name 1. and have ever since. When my daughter was born since we where not married we did the same thing Little Salle Suzy Lastname1-Lastname2. Figuring that when school starts she would only go by Lastname1.

When we got married I thought I would just do the same. Legaly my name will be Lastname1-Lastname2 but most places (banks, schools, doctors) I only need to sign lastname1.Did I do it Right? I had a friend who said I did it backwards and should have put lastname2 as my middle name but I want to keep my middle name and I want to be the same as my daughter.

eeek i think this sounds confusing.

I was born Sally Suzy Smith-Johnson. Only went by Sally Suzy Smith.

Daughter was born and I added DH's name so its Jessy Woody Lopez-Smith. But in school she only needs the Lopez (her dad's, my husbands last "name").

I did for our marriage license Sally Suzy Lopez-Smith. and I want to go by Lopez.

Did I do it right??? I am concerned now!

My parents also gave me both of their last names, but my mom's name was first, followed by my dad's name and I usually go by the very last name.

So in your case, if the name was Sally Suzy Lopez Smith, the way I have always written my name is Sally Smith NOT Sally Lopez.

Not sure which way is "right" or if it even matters

Do what makes you happy--I actually really like how you've worked it out.  You've kept your names but use the ones that you want to.  There is nothing wrong with that at all.

@PenelopeB: I'm sorry I don't know, but you might want to check with your county clerk's office or social security office for the right answer.

I don't think there's any 'right' answer.  Women use all kinds of last name combinations.  Do whatever feels right to you.
