Thanks for the advice! I always heard to get 2 or 3 copies so we got 2. I havent had to give either up yet and I heard once you send it for your passport, they mail it back to you. Every other place including SSA or DMV just looked at it and made a copy. I think it depends where you live (for SSA or DMV) and what places you are changing your name at.
ya i only got 2 copies of my license and when I got my name changed, they didn't require the actual license, just that I have it with me when I was making the request and they may have made a copy of it, I don't remember
Yeah...I wish I had done research on it first instead of taking that court clerk's word for it. "Several copies" pfft... I think she just wanted to make the City some money :P
I think three copies is a good amount to get. That way, if you do need to change it or leave it with a bureau (example: my bank required a copy to keep, and if you change it with SS via the mail, or your HR may need a copy), you still have at least two copies left.
So - yeah - you don't need eight copies because most places you just need to show it to, they don't actually need to keep a copy. Keep them in safe place, and they'll come in handy one day. At least they're cheap! Certified copies in NJ run $10-$15!
How long does it take to get certified copies? Our wedding is in Texas and we're sticking around until Monday afternoon so that we can get the SS office done before going on the HM and then back home to Kentucky. Will we be able to get the copies in the same day?
@ MrsDee - you should be able to get the copies on the same day. I'm not sure...you probably should call the court clerk and ask though so you can plan better!

When we went to get our marriage license, the clerk said after we were married to bring the license back to the courthouse and get SEVERAL certified copies of the license to give to my creditors, etc. proving my name change. The copies were $2.00 each. So after the wedding we made a list of people who would probably need them (SS, bank, DMV, credit cards, student loan, AT&T, etc) which totaled 8 copies, so we decided to just go ahead and get 10, in case we were missing anyone.
Well, I've just begun the process of changing my name, and so far, only 3 on the list actually need a copy of the ML. They are: social security, my bank (which also has my cc), and the Tag Agency to change my DL info.
I have been able to call, or update online, my name change with the rest of my creditors. Would have been nice to know that before I got upteen copies! I know it's not a HUGE financial loss, but still...
So I just wanted to share that with you all, and advise you to call around before you spend extra money on copies you don't need.
