@OliviaBee:  It’s actually more expensive if you wait for it to expire! (If you’re in the US, anyway) So get the new one now.

No you really do not need to. I just traveled through Europe on my passport with my maiden name on it and had no trouble whatsoever. You just need to make sure that if you book tickets anywhere where you will need it you book in the name on the passport

@OliviaBee:  I would wait until you are planning to travel.  We got married in 2009 and I didn’t change it until last year.  It costs the same if you do it now or do it when you travel as long as you do it before it completely expires.

I guess as PP said you could just not change it but we were going to be driving and I wanted both names to be the same.

It is only free if you got it within the last year unfortunately.
