Changing zip-up dress to lace up?

    Hi ladies,

I have my dress, and it's zip-up. I was thinking of having it altered to lace up. The material is taffeta with a built-in corset bodice. My only concern is that it is a very heavy dress (maybe 10lbs?!), and is princess gown.

Do you think it's possible to change it to lace up?

    Thanks.

I think you would really need to take the specific dress to a seamstress (assuming you would hire someone to do this) and see what he/she has to say about it. I posted, a while back looking for advice on doing this (my dress is much lighter) and some posters with sewing experience said to think about the fabric panel underneath the lace up, something I did not initially think about. In the end, I decided to keep the buttons down the back instead of altering. Good luck!

I am doing the same thing.  Before I would even order it I wanted to know the cost if I ordered it special with a corset back and the cost for alterations.  It was $250 to have the designer add it on or $50 for the seamstress to do it.  I am going for the seamstress.  I feel confident they will do a good job.  My dress is lace and organza.

Thanks for the advice. My waist is a few inches larger than the dress measurement, and that's why I am asking about this. I also thought of just sewing in some lace up ties 1/2 way at the back of the dress (of course I'd get an experienced seamstress to do this!). That way, the dress can still have some sort of original support.

    What do you think?

Wow, Miss.Skinner, you got a good price for alterations ($50)! My friend had her dress bustled, minor hem and the off-shoulder straps taken in, and it cost her $120! I wish I knew how to sew so I could've done this myself :)
