i think they are definitely a nice touch (i want them too myself as we are also having a plated dinner) but not 100% necessary just because its a plated dinner. I think if you can afford it, then its great, but if not, NO WORRIES. It won't look weird at all without them.
I know for me it will come down between nice linens or chargers in my budget .. and i'll go for the linens instead! :)
I really wanted charger plates, but my venue was charging $2 each for them. My mom negotiated with the venue and got them included for free. Maybe you can negotiate? I do think they set the table up nicely, but are not required.
I wanted them so badly, but we can't afford them. The hall doesn't have their own, I would have to get them. I got them as low as 75 cents each for a rental, but it's still close to 175 dollars for something that really isn't necessary...
I like the look, too, but I couldn't justify the expense. I decided to buy 12" diameter doilies and use them as a sort of charger instead. I think I paid $30 for 120 of them which was MUCH better for my budget than chargers would have cost. Maybe you could do the same thing, or think of another alternative?
They are definitely not a must, but a want. I wanted them but couldnt justify the cost for over 200 of them and I couldnt find a color I wanted to match my wedding colors! Its actually a good thing I didnt end up getting them because my venue had white salad plates at each setting, i didnt realize the salad was served tableside so it was a nice addition and made the table look a bit fuller.
Nice and elegAnt. I got mines at party city, @2.00 dóls. Each, square and silver like.
I would LOVE chargers, but went with fany linens instead. Although the nicer linens were about $5 more per table than "plain," we only have 25 tables. But 200 guests! And the chargers were $4 each at my venue!! Unless I could find some for around $1 apiece, I just don't think it'll happen.
Doilies look like this:originals are crocheted
but I think the bee was talking about paper ones
I'd love to have them. I'm thinking of putting up a thread in a couple of weeks asking if anyone wants to split the costs. That should bring it down a bit. If you have at least 4 brides splitting it. As long as they live near each other, it works out okay.
I want some as well and even though I wouldn't need but about 40 of them I still can't find any for a reasonable cost.

Are charger plates a must for a proper place setting?
I was trying to save money when I said no to them, but now I'm wondering if the tables will look weird without them.
FYI we are having plated dinner.
