Which do you prefer?  My sister is due in a few months and I've been doing some research for her and also me in the future.  Has anyone tried both and prefer one over the other?  Also, would you recommend disposable diapers for newborns because of the fit?

We have narrowed it down to bumGenius all in one One Size or Charlie Banana 2 in one One Size.

Charlie Banana and Fuzzibunz have a number of similarities. While I haven't used Charlie Banana yet, I do have a lot of Fuzzibunz One Size.  I also have a number of BunGenius 4.0s.  In the beginning (~8 lbs), I preferred by BG one size diapers but as my son has grown (13+ lbs), I actually prefer my FB.  I think they have a trimmer fit since it is more customizeable; however, I still use my BG a lot, just not as much as my FB.  I think you'll find a variety of opinions since each baby is different, fit is different too.

I used newborn cloth diapers on DS rather than paper diapers.  I did a rental through Diaper Daisy for 6 weeks with the Kissaluvs Size 0 and Thristies covers.  During that time I used paper diapers over one weekend because we were traveling and I won't do that again if I can help it.  Too many leaks/blowouts and way too much waste/trash for my preference.  The rental was less than we would have paid for paper diapers too so that is always a nice selling point.  Again, a very individual decision.

I haven't used Charlie Banana, but I do have BG 4.0's in addition to other brands. I find that my BG's are the best fitting on DS (he's a little heavy weight though). I do like all my other brands, each for their specific reasons. I'm actually really glad we have a verity and not just all one type.

We did use disposables on DS until his umbilical stump fell off, at which point we switched to cloth. He was 3 weeks and every single disposable diaper he was in resulted in a leak/blowout (we tried many different brands). I wish we would have used them sooner! I went with disposables because I wanted to avoid buying diapers he was going to use for such a short period of time and I just couldn't bring myself to use a used diaper.

I am still pregnant so I can't give my opinion on what type of diapers I like best. But I plan to use disposables in the begnings. Mainly because I have no idea how big she will be and I don't want to buy a ton of tiny NB size cloth, just to have a 9lb baby (most likely) and have non of them fit.

I plan to use them for the first few weeks

do you mean BG elementals?  I haven't tried CB, but I do like BG.  I wouldn't buy too much of any one thing, though BG universally seem to have the best fit.  Also, some NB diapers fit up to 12 or 15 lbs, so you can get a lot of use out of them, even if only part time.

@cannotwait:I'm really not sure what I mean! :)  We've only just started looking seriously.

    Thanks all for the info!

I would just get prefolds for a newborn.  They go through so many diapers.  Anything that couldn't be tossed in the dryer would be kind of a pain.  Plus they're much cheaper and good starters.  I would use disposables the first two or three days until the tar poop phase passes.  LOL

Maybe also consider researching Elimination Communication.  Newborns are so good at letting you know they have to eliminate!  But I could see why that may not be on the table.

YW!  I love talking cloth diapering!  Embarassed

When people tell me they are interested, I ask them their motivation and that usually helps me make a suggestion: budget, environment, health/skin, better poop containment or that they are cute!

I haven't used Charlie Bananas only Bumgenius 4.0s and elementals. I agree with @cannotwait: that I would hesitate to buy too much of any one type of diaper before the baby is born because you might not like the fit you get with that brand diaper and then have to buy more of something else. For a newborn if you wanted to do something besides prefolds, I really liked happy heiny minis which are a small pocket diaper. I think the weight range is from 5-15 lbs and they truely fit my son up to about 13 or so lbs. I also thought rumparooz and oh katys were OS diapers that fit well on a newborn.

ETA: I forgot to say that we really like our BG 4.0s and Elementals. I'd say out of all of my pocket diapers the 4.0's are my favorite and our OS Happy Heinys are my husband's favorite. We both also really like grovia shells.
