I have a conundrum. A pretty big one in the grand scheme of wedding planning. My FI and I cannot, no matter how many pros and cons we list, decide between Charlotte and Charleston as a location for our wedding extravaganza!
We live in Charlotte, love Charlotte, it has been where our relationship flourished and where we got engaged. We have a lot of friends here, but not much family. I love the idea of having families and other out of towners come to “our city” to experience it. I even have thoughts of what we would do in the hotels for the OOT-ers bags etc.
….But, I’ve always dreamed of having my wedding on the beach/coast. I found an amazing venue in Charleston across the bridge with beautiful views of the harbor, but I cannot even begin to fathom how difficult it would be to plan a wedding from 4 hours away.
I need your help! Besides people who have been married in these two areas, how difficult is it to plan a sort-of destination wedding from another state?

@eam253: I didn’t vote because I loved Charleston when I visited it. I often wish I could have done my wedding where I live right now as opposed to my hometown because I’ve had to make several trips a year to another state and it’s just hard to coordinate and enjoy things sometimes. Where I live now and where the wedding actually is are a 12+ hour drive apart. I also would have loved to show family and friends where we live now and what the heck is so great about it.
I would also try to read up about what it’s like to have a wedding in Charleston…I only came upon some threads by chance that mentioned how stressful it was trying to block hotels for the downtown area and whatnot.

I voted for having your wedding where you always dreamed it would be. I live in Phoenix and am planning a wedding in central California. It’s about an 11 hour drive. I won’t say it has been easy, but it also hasn’t been hard. All of my family lives 4 hours away from my venue. In the end I think it is worth it because I have an amazing venue… and it is further for me than anyone else. The hardest part was meeting with potential vendors. However, everyone that I have ended up working with have been amazing about me living out of state. I say go for it!

Definitely Charleston. I worked in Charlotte for a year and it’s perfectly nice but Charleston is a super special city! Perfect for a wedding.
