I'm trying to find an apartment that FI and I will be moving into a month before the wedding. We know the area we want to live in, and we have a range of what our price to pay is.

Ideally we would like a charming, spacious apartment, with hardwood floors, a one or two bedroom (a space for me to put my treadmill), PLENTY of closet space, that is close to the shopping district of said area.

Currently, I have it down to two options:

     Option 1-

CHARMING, one bedroom, with large front porch, off street parking, hardwood floors, vintage windows, archways, light and airy... but not much closet space, and not much space other than the bare basics.

    Option 2-

PRACTICAL two bedroom plus den, located right on the street where we want to live, TONs of closet space, love the landlord (he promised to put in a new stove, refridgerator, sinks in both kitchen and bathroom, new carpeting, will paint the walls ANY pastel color we want...etc) but it doesn't have all the cute elements like the hardwood floors, archways, and the hallway leading to our apartment is musty, and has dark red dirty walls, and really doesn't look very inviting.

    What would you chose? Why?

if it is your first time living together go practical, it will mean less frustrations to fight over! Plus it will make the transition from "yours and mine" to "ours" much easier!

I'm all about function over fashion, so I said go with the practical one!  Anyway, it would make me happier to come home at night to a nice, spacious house with room for all my things than a cute, but cramped, place.  There's lots of fun decor ideas that you could do to make your practical space cuter, but you can't add extra space to make the cute place larger.

i voted for charming, but it was before i read the description.  So now I say "Practical!", i think you can make it CHARMING, once you move in and put your personality in there.

sigh -- the charming sounds wonderful, but i voted for the practical!  It just makes sense to have a little extra space so you aren't always sharing space.  sounds like it will look new and fresh by the time you move in!  good luck!

It's hard to say without pictures, since housing is such a personal thing!  Everyone has their own preference for what they like and how they want to live.  I'm inclined to say that I would choose the practical one because you can always decorate it to be cute and charming.

Go with the practical one. You will appreciate the extra space every single day that you live there.  You would probably stop noticing the cute elements of the smaller apartment over time, and really, if you're looking for a two-bed, getting a one-bed just because it's cute isn't a good idea.

The apartment that is soon to be ours is a huge two-bed (seriously, it's one of the biggest I've ever seen in this area) within our price range that just happens to be in a neighborhood I very much dislike.  But FI loves it, and I love the apartment enough that I'll have to get used to the new neighborhood.  You win some, you lose some.

Wow. The overwhelming majority seems to think that I should do practical! Very interesting!!! This is our first place living together, and so that is true that perhaps we should be a bit more practical hmm. Very interesting.

We went with charming- we got the cutest apartment with white cabinets, so i could decorate the kitchen, but no dishwasher, not a lot of space etc. We moved into a duplex last month that is well...less charming. It has a dishwasher and storage space and a garage! The kitchen is kind of ugly, there is way too much wood. But I am glad every day to have the space!

If there's more room in the practical one AND you love the landlord....well, as a renter who's had horrible experiences with tiny places and crummy landlords, I would take the practical option. Get the landlord's commitment to putting in new appliances and painting the walls in writing before you sign a lease though.

Wow. the voters have chosen! Thanks for making this easier! :-D I think I might wait for a few more places to become available. Hopefully these won't be gone just yet!
