Hi lovely ladies,
So far the experience of haivng to take my temperature every morning hasn’t help with the stress of TTC…
Here’s teh question: when you take your temperature, do you only take it once and you’re done? I have a habit of taking my temperature and after the first reading, try to take a second reading (and sometimes a third and fourth!) in a row to see if my thermometer is accurate. And not ONCE do I get the same results! And we’re not talking a 0.01 difference, we’re normally talking a 0.5-1 degree difference. It’s driving me nuts!
Should I just take the first reading and go with that?
For background; this is my second month charting. The first month I didn’t realise I had to take the temp at the same time every day and only took it when I woke up.
So now I set the alarm for 5 am every day and take my reading.
I also bought a new thermometer with 2 decimal points to be more precise. Here it is for reference: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B009HONS4K/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You are supposed to take your temp while you are still half asleep so the fact that you are awake and redoing it time after time doesn’t help. There is no need to keep taking it after the first one.
I wake up and take my temp and then go get ready for work. I usually don’t even look at it until I get home for lunch and then put it in my phone.

@proudcatlady: Ideally, you need to take it every day in the morning before you put your feet on the floor. I use the first reading, no need to keep taking more because the more awake you are the less accurate it will be. Juts try to read it once and memorize it unless you have one of those thermometers that remembers it in case you need to go back to sleep. Feel free to join us at the Charters thread.

you only need to take it once. i’ve taken it more than once in a row (because i didn’t want to believe the 1st result) and it’s always different. it’ll just stress you out to take it more than once.

Go with the first one!! I did this a couple of times cause I had slept with my mouth open & wanted to make sure I was getting a good reading. I found that most of the time, the 1st temp made the most sense.

Thanks ladies! And anyone reading, keep the thoughts coming!
@Birdee106: Thanks! When I take the first one I am half asleep, but as I take more I sort of wake up a bit, but then go back to sleep. So I’ll just stick to the first one and stop the others 🙂
@candy11: Thanks too 🙂 I take it from bed at 5 am (3 hours before I get up) so sounds like i’m doing that part right. I’ll just stop at the first reading then (thanfully my thermometer records the last 10 readings so I can record it later).
Sorry to bother, but how can I join the charters? I see the threads but there are so many of them I get lost on which one to join..
@calibee79: You’re so right; it totally stresses me out. I thought I’d take multpiles bc I wasn’t sure if I could trust my thermometer (sometimes it beeps very quickly and sometimes it takes ages). But sounds like everyone is unanimous and I should stick to the first one!

@proudcatlady: First of all to join the Charters you have to pay a membership ( annually whether or not you use the thread or not) then you have to tell all of your facebook friends you joined so they find us and like us. Just kidding 🙂 LOL! No we are totally free and awesome. All the different threads you see correspond to a previous thread that got closed because there were too many posts. We talk a lot 🙂 All you have to do is go the most recent one (currently XXXVII) and do the roll call. Hope to see you there.

If you’re comfortable with it, you might want to try temping vaginally instead of orally. I sleep with my mouth open sometimes and found that my temps just weren’t consistent enough (and changed pretty substantially when I tried temping more than one time in a row). If I temped on a morning when my mouth was open, it would be down. If my mouth had been closed, it would be up. And forget it, if in my still sleeping state, I grabbed for my water glass instead of the thermometer first. I also don’t worry about stupid things anymore like did I put the thermometer under my tongue enough, did I put it in the same side of my mouth, etc, etc – all stuff that probably doesn’t matter but I still worried about.

@candy11: hahahahaha you nearly got me there! At first I was like “hmmm that’s odd/disappointing… doesnt sound like something the hive would do (charge/facebook etc)” hahahaha I’m gonna go look for the latest roll call and join then 🙂
@GearBride: I did think of doing vaginally actually; thought there’d be less uncertainty (although I don’t have the mouth open problem I’m constantly worried about wehther I put in the right place or not), But when I tried, I could never be sure if I heard the thermometer beeping or not and it ended up waking me up 🙁 I couldn’t figure out a trip to know when the tem was ‘done.’ If you have any tips on that, I’d probably prefer to taking temps that way and will try it next cycle – unless I’m lucky and get a BFP in this one of course 🙂

@proudcatlady: I don’t have too much to recommend. I have the Target brand basal thermometer and that sucker beeps loud enough for me to always hear it. …in fact, my cats have gotten to know that that sound means I’m kinda awake and they hop up to try and get me to wake up all the way so I’ll pet them… The only other thing I can think to recommend is to hold the covers up (or hide under them, lol) so you can hear better? I know, not the greatest advice.

@GearBride: hahahah I have a cat too and she always wakes up when she hears my alarm for takng my temp and asks for cuddles/food. I think I may have to experiment with hearing the thermometer down there for the next cycle bc it is much easier in a way…
