I think it all depends on how “active” you want to be in TTC! I started charting for birth control puposes about a year ago, but now we’re thinking about TTC this fall, so I’m kind of glad we did because now I know when my most fertile days are.

Sometimes I think charting takes a little bit of the magic and mystery out of the process though, you know? Because if you know when you’re ovulating, you only have to have sex once to get pregnant potentially. If you don’t know when you’re ovulating, you just have a have a lot of sex :).

So basically, it’s all up to you. If you think you might have problems conceiving, go ahead and start charting! If you want to have a little fun with it and don’t mind it taking a while to conceive, I’d say just “wing it” for a few months, then start charting if you feel like you need a little help.

Charting is super interesting though, I think. Understanding how your body works and the ways hormones affect your cycle is fascinating. Definitely pick up a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility! It’s only like $16 at Amazon.

I charted several months before trying to become pregnant. I wanted to know my cycle and be familiar with the signs. I read Taking Charge of you Fertility, if you do decide to chart this book gives you detailed instructions and even has an online counterpart you can use to better understand your temps and other signs. Good Luck!
