You should take your temp when you first wake up because you need to have atleast 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep to get an accurate basal temp.
@bells- So what time would that be at? The first time I wake up in the middle of the night?
Looking at your nightly schedule, I think the only accurate reading you would get would be the one at 3AM, since you need 3-4 hours (ideally more) of uninterrupted sleep to get a good reading. The question is, can you really rely on yourself to temp at that hour in the night? Do you consistently (every. single.night.) get up at that same time? That's the problem with temping. If you deviate from the routine, even a little, it can really mess up your chart.
I get up a lot during the night, toss and turn, sleep with my mouth open in a cold room, etc, so temping orally didn't work for me and I got crazy readings. I'm thinking of temping vaginally in the future in order to rectify this.
@MissMaine- I don't always get up at the exact same time. It's sad that I don't even have 3-4 hours of uninterupted sleep a night. I really just need to find out if I'm ovulating and how often.
@roxy821: I would really consider temping vaginally, then. You can do that consistently when you get up for the day, before you get up/move too much, and it will be a little more accurate.
I just think temping orally in your case is going to give you super erratic charts.
Also, check out the Charters of the Hive thread. There's a great group over there and they are so helpful with charting!

@MissMaine- Thank you. Can you use the regular basal thermometer or do I need a different one do do it vaginally?
@Roxy - I kind of trained myself not to get up to pee...or I look at the clock and if it's within 2 hours of my wake up time, I hold it. I think you're going to have to try a few different things to see what works.
I don't know if 3am is a problem...but I would guess it wouldn't be since you've been asleep for nearly 4 hours.
@MrsGreenGrass- I medically cannot do that. I get in such pain that I will actually vomit and have had backup and my kidneys have shut down. Thankfully I can regularly take medications but since the medicine causes limb malformation I'd rather pee every couple of hours. I will just try to see if I can find a regular time even if it's in the middle of the night to take my temperature. If not I may have to take my temperature vaginally.
@roxy821:I usually wake up at 6 but I found that I was getting up at 5 every morning to go to the bathroom so I set my alarm for 5. I take my temp and just go straight back to sleep. If I were you I'd set an alarm for 3am, take your temp and then go to the bathroom. Sometimes it can take a little experimenting to find what works best for you :)
@RunningElley- I am going to really pay attention to exactly when I wake up during the night for the next couple days and I have to I'll set a little alarm on my nightstand to get up. Do you use OPK's, do you do that at the same time?
@roxy821:Oh I totally missed the OPK question! I do use OPKs as well and usually the instructions say to use them in the afternoon after you have held your urine for 4 hours. I usually take them right when I get home from work, around 6pm. I go to the bathroom at 2pm after I get back from lunch and don't drink anything until after I take the OPK. Some people take them both in the mornings and the afternoon just to make sure that they catch the LH surge but I only take them in the evenings and it's worked really well for me!
Just FYI...vaginally will be the same issue as orally...you still need 3-4 hours. I think setting an alarm at your first wake up time sounds like the best plan. : )

Ok so this is all very new to me and it's safe to admit I'm a little confused.
So I bought the correct thermometer and it says to take you temperature after a night's rest before you do anything. Well I usually go to bed about 11, wake up about 3 & 5 to go to the bathroom, I then wake up at 5:30/6 when DH gets up for work and then I finally get up for the day at 7. When would you recommend I take my temperature to get the most accurate reading? Also I bought ovulation sticks, when should I use those?
Yes, I know I get up a lot at night I do have a diagnosed condition and have been medicated, but since it causes birth defects I cannot take it right now.
Thanks girls, as you can tell I'm a little bit lost. I haven't got my period in 3 months and I had an appointment with the dr for next week but since I just got it I have to cancel and start charting so I can figure out what is going on.
