I don't know the first thing about Pittsburgh, but if you are looking for inexpensive food, I would suggest finding a restaurant rather than a caterer. I had a Greek restaurant in Seattle cater my wedding and they charged me $12 pp for a buffet. The food was delicious and plentiful, and they were so easy to work and negotiate with.
I am learning that the cocktail style can be as much as a buffet. Big Burrito (They own Mad Mex, Soba, Umi) quoted me a min. of $2000 for food. The Fluted Mushroom was also around the same price for cocktail vs buffet.
FI said to look it as if you are going to a place to eat. How much do you spend on yourself when you go out to eat? Find a number per person you are comfortable spending and stick to it. With enough research and phone calls, you will find someone.

So, I know the most expensive aspect of a wedding is the food... and this really bothers me. I wish we could just make all our own food and not have to pay someone to do it.. but everyone tells me this is going to be to much work : (
Anyway, now I am on the hunt for a SUPER CHEAP caterer. We are only having a cocktail/hor's d'oeuvres reception, so I feel like that shouldn't cost too much.. right???
If anyone knows of anywhere around the Pittsburgh area that is good, and affordable please let me know! Thanks!
