@ambergirl:  you may only wear the dress for a day, but you will be looking at the photos of it forever. Splurge!!

You could buy a China knock-off dress, then that way you can pick a dress you like and not pay a designer price for it. There are a ton of threads on here for Jasmine’s Bridal Shop and Dressilyme, maybe you could look into them.

Like you, I struggled with spending huge amounts on a dress for one day, but I just LOATHED all the cheap ones I looked at (loathed most of the dresses I looked at, to bhe honest!). In the end I chose a simple, slimline but pretty (and expensive!) dress, so once the wedding’s over I’m going to have it shortened and hopefully wear it again to other events (maybe not other weddings though!). Obviously this strategy depends on your taste because it won’t work so well with a big ballgown but personally I’m 100% happy with my decision.

Have you looked at any of the pre-owned dress sites? That way you could get a higher quality dress but not have to shell out so much for something you’ll only wear once

Ugh.  In the US we can get the same dresses that are in Europe for a fraction of the cost.  It’s ridiculous.  If you have any friends in the US they can send you a “gift.”  Hell it may even be cheaper to fly over buy the dress and bring it back if you go off season.

You can find a good quality dress that isn’t expensive.  Custom, China bridal shop, etc- good craftsmanship and good materials without the “designer” upcharge.  I personally think it’s silly to spend a ton on a dress you wear once and the bridal industry is insane to make people think that’s normal/ok- it’s not an investment and looking at pictures now and then wouldn’t make it worth it.  But I wouldn’t buy something that is cheap quality either.

@ambergirl:  I really struggle with this too! I’ve justified it because in my culture a wedding is such a big deal that it’s okay. I also did sample sales and ended up finding a beautiful dress, highly suggest it if you’re sample size! Right after X-mas is the right time to buy dresses also because business is so slow you can often get a good deal!
