Anybody know the cheapest way to get into NYC? My parents, Fiance and I are planning a trip for our Thanksgiving weekend (Oct 5-8) staying friday night until we come back monday… we’re coming from Ottawa and it is a 9 hour drive. Since it’s a short time, I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for the quickest/most affordable way (other than driving)?

Probably the bus, but I have no idea how long it takes. Train travel is often more expensive than flying.

There isn’t really any way that’s quick AND Affordable. If its quick, it’s expensive (planes) And if is affordable, it’s a long trip (bus). Trains can be in between depending on where you are coming from. But they aren’t really quick because they make so many stops. Unfortunately there is no such thing as quick and affordable.

Other than flying, driving is quickest and usually cheapest, except you need to park for the weekend which can be really expensive. The border stop on the bus can take forever. The train is more expensive but more comfortable than the bus, but the schedules are really not very convenient as you’re usually either getting in at night. From Montreal the train takes about 11 hours, leaving from 930am (so you’ll need to get to Mtl from Ottawa early in the am) and gets in just before 9pm, so you would stay the Friday night, but you’d be leaving first thing Monday morning, so you’d really just get those two days.

My boss’ family comes from Ottawa very regularly, and they always drive. If you’re looking to save money, i’d park outside of the city (look to NJ or Westchester) then take the commuter train in from there. Parking is going to be crazy expensive in the city, but generally free at train stations!
