"Cheong Sam" Shoes

posted 6 months ago in Beehive

Hello all Bees!

I need help in finding an appropriate pair of shoes to go with my "Cheong Sam" (Chinese Dress) currently being made. It's a very traditional one with the main colour being a deep red, with gold coloured patterns on it. Some have suggested wearing red closed toe pumps...I'm not so sure and have had much trouble finding a pair that didn't look gawdy with the dress.

What have you all worn with your traditional Chinese Dress? Any suggestions?

 Thanks! =D

I'm going to wear a red mermaid style chinese dress and I'm going to pair it with 3 inch red slip on heels/mules.

Wear what makes you more comfortable in.

Where are you having your dress made at?

i think gold strappy sandals would work and i would try zappos. you can sort by color either gold or metallic for some cute sandals.

I think it'll be hard to match the reds -- I 2nd the gold idea.

I agree with SandpaperTongue.  It'll be too difficult to match the red shoes with your dress (and IMHO too matchy matchy).  I know, trying to find a matching red interior lining for FH's suit is near impossible!!!

I'm going with gold open toed pumps for mine.  If gold isn't for you, pick up one of the colours used in the embroidery for another colour.

I have a red cheongsam with gold patterns too.  I just bought these gold shoes from Target that Miss Sundae blogged about last week:

I actually took my dress to a Nordstrom Rack before and tried on 7 different reds and nothing looked right with a chinese dress.  Definitely go for the gold!  Save yourself the hassle of trying to find the exact red!  I got something very similar to these.  Well, at least the material is the same.  Design was a bit different.

I think I was lucky because I found the perfect colored red shoes to go with my dress.

My sister on the other hand had gold shoes that she wore with her red Chinese dress.  She only wore it for a few hours.  I have a picture that I can send to you if your interested. If you like these shoes, I will be happy to sell these to you.  She bought these at Charlotte Russe.  They are a size 8 (she is normally a size 7.5, but these run a bit small).

Thanks!

i bought and returned 3 pairs of shoes from endless.com and zappos.com before finding the BEST shoes to go with my very traditionally red qipao... they look more formal in person than they do in the picture online, plus they are naturalizer shoes so they are SUPER comfortable, with a padded footbed... and they are not too flashy so you can definitely wear them after the wedding too =) here is my perfect pair

I also went with Gold shoes for my cheong sam...it was something I could re-wear and it went perfectly with the dress...

I think ultimately you're going to discover the near impossibility of trying to match the red of your dress to shoes, so spare yourself the stress and consider alternate colors that you will re-wear.

Thank you all for your lovely suggestions -- I shall begin my search for a suitable pair of gold shoes =)

Ms. Jadey: in answer to your question, I have enlisted an old Shanghainese tailor to make the dress for me here in Toronto.
