Ok, I pretty much could have written this myself!  Except for the yoga….I don’t do yoga.

I went through a PILE of tests a few years ago (from holter monitors to treadmill stress tests) and never found a darned thing wrong with my heart (thankfully).

I think my pain was caused (it rarely happens anymore) by any combination of the following:

– pulled muscles/tiny inflammed tears in chest muscles

– stress/panic attack symptoms (I was with my dad when he had a massive heart attack and I had a lot of stress and panic issues in the months following that event)

– indigestion (I also have acid relfux/GERD)

I totally believe you when you say you thought you were going to die or that the pain was intense – I hear ya.

Sorry I’m no real help answer-wise, but I’m here to sympathize!  I hope your doctor can provide you with some more answers.

I have exercise induced asthma and had the same symptoms so I started taking my inhaler again.  But then I thought about it and realized I hadn’t needed to use my inhaler in over 15 years, so maybe it was another problem.  So I tested it out and found that when I over exerted myself beyond what my physical shape was in (whether it be too hard of cardio or just a weird movement -I sometimes even had them when I was doing new ab exercises and planks), my chest would respond like that.  I’m doubting it was my asthma, it was me pushing myself past my current fitness level.  Once I became conscious of it, I either dealt with it and pushed through and once I got used to the exercise it went away, or I did other cardio activities that didn’t cause that type of pain, but still allowed me to progress fitness wise so I could go back to those workouts without the pain.
