It depends on what style you are looking for. We researched photogs ruthlessly and met with about 15 before choosing ours. here are the ones we liked the most:
Ocken Photography - excellent at using natural light and capturing a wide range of emotions. Creative and willing to try anything. This is who we ultimately chose.
Life on Prints - Great use of black and white. Very dynamic photos.
ZR Weddings - Dreamy, etherial, soft, lovely photos.
These are all at the top of your budget but well worth it!
Hi Rinstar,
There are a lot of good recommendations for Chicago photographers on the ISPWP website. Some are based in Chicago, and some are nearby and often travel to Chicago for weddings. And each photographer shows their starting price so at least it gives you a starting point and an idea of relative costs.
In terms of what you need to know when picking a photographer there are some great articles on the site that can help you.

I hope that helps get you started. Good luck!

Thank you both so much. I really appreciate the recommendations and the resources for finding additional information. Thank you!!!
Rinstar,
My husband and I got married this past August. We had the most amazing photographer (priced a tad bit higher than what you're looking to spend, but well worth it). Brian Clay Photography was absolutly amazing, he gave us everything we could've asked for in our pictures. After stumbling across his website we were blown away, and then he exceeded our expectations. His talent is unbelievable, he captured very essential detail of our day beautifully. Hiring Brian was by far the best choice we could've made!
Check out his site:
We used two fabulous photographers for two different sessions and loved them both! They're both definitely in your price range.
Marc Yap was our first engagement photoshoot photographer:
and Peter Coombs did another engagement photoshoot for us, our wedding AND a TTD photoshoot:

we ended up booking with heather parker after we saw my friend renee's photos. she looks so amazing and the photos really showed. here is hers, obviously i haven't gotten mine yet since my wedding hasn't happend :)
My fiance is a photographer in Chicago and is launching his wedding photography businesses...and has already started to book a lot of weddings! One thing we learned when looking for a photographer is that if you book a photographer who is just starting out (assuming you've looked at their work and can tell that they know their way around a camera!), it's a great way to get more for your money!
Check him out -
Good luck Chicago beesin booking your photographer - probably one of the most important things you'll do!

Hello! I am getting married in Chicago next October and according to the hundreds of wedding timelines out there I'm supposed to be finding a photographer. Now while I am very good at planning the wedding (I used to be an event planner), I am clueless when it comes to photography. All the wedding photographer websites I look at seem similar and look great, yet I have no idea how much they cost. Does anyone have any photographer recommedations out there, especially ones that are around or under the $4000 price tag? I would really love to hear your thoughts or at least things I need to know when picking a photographer. Thanks so much!
