I am a waiting bee, but have often thought about this... I have what is commonly known as "chicken skin" (permanent goose bumps, keratosis pilaris, lol) on my arms. My mom said it gets better with age, but it has definitely gotten worse.. Right now it just sucks a bit, but I would love to be able to do something for it before my eventual wedding day.

So anyway, is there anyone else who has this and is worried about how it will look on your wedding day (if you have a strapless or non-sleeved dress)? Is there anything that you are doing for it? (Special lotions, dermabrasion, etc.). Or are you not worried about it? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on this! :)

Ok, I totally had to google image this to find out what it was. There were some treatment kits that I pulled up too, maybe you could try those?

Can you visit a dermotologist?  He or she can prescripe a topical retinoid that will get rid of it.

Otherwise, a scrub with salicylic acid and regular application of amylactin lotion will smooth things out.

Have you seen Octo's post on this? She got a lot of helpful responses and discussions.

I have it, a light case of it- but it's on the backs of my upper arms, my upper thighs and on my neck.

For my neck I just don't worry about it much.  It's really faint.  For my arms and thighs though, I've found using a micro exfoliator scrub helps. I use it every other day or so and it seems to help.

    Good luck :)

I have it as well.  Over the years I've given up on trying to do anything about it.  People ask me all the time if I'm cold ...and I've even given up on explaining it.  I just say "Yup, I'm always cold."  ha ha

For the wedding, however, I think I'm just going to have my makeup artist air brush my arms that way the pumps are not noticable in any pictures.

@MrsSl82be: Haha, I just googled it, and thankfully my arms are not as bad as many of those pics, lol. But it is actually quite common. You probably know people with it!

@teaadntoast: What is amylactin? Is that prescription only? As soon as I get regular insurance, I think I will visit the derm. Every once in a while I put salicylic moisturizer on them and it definitely helps a bit. Regular scrubbing, however, seems to make it worse, so I will continue with lotion and can hopefully visit the dermatologist soon :) Thanks

I have a little bit of it- some on the upper arms and a little on my back. The sun totally takes mine away, which is why I picked a summer wedding :) Sometimes, I srub myself with sugar and really helps to smooth my skin out.

@ktisthatbees: Thank you for the link! That's very helpful :) Thanks!

@thewheelsonthebus: Yes, it's pretty much the upper arms, mostly behind (but now a bit worse..), and now it's all on my thighs and hips area too ugh. It's annoying because it's not smooth and it's red. I think it's worse in the Michigan winters, so I'll have to stick to my September wedding date plan ;) But I'll definitely have to try a microexfoliator scrub, because I usually get the really rough ones. Thanks for the tip!

@TxsAggieBride: Lol, "always cold." That's hilarious! :) Haha, I guess I have the additional problem of always being cold in general on top of that! So my goose bumps are extra... goosey?? Lol. But that's a good idea to get them airbrushed! I never would have thought about that. I sometimes put concealer makeup on bug bites, bruises, or the random spider veins on my legs, but I never thought of airbrushing :) (Maybe I should just air brush my entire body haha, jk.) But definitely a great idea, thanks!

@mwitter80: Ooh. Awesome, I can try that now since I actually have some eczema lotion because I sometimes get eczema on my feet or a little, tiny, barely noticeable, bit on my hands. (Thanks, mom and dad, for my allergic diseases haha, asthma, allergies, eczema, chicken skin, lol).

@Mrs. Cooper: Yay for summer weddings :) And yours is coming up soon!! yay :) I'm sure you (and your arms) will look beautiful ;):)

I voted that I have it as well, but the bumps aren't red on me, just raised. They only get red if I get really cold. My biggest problem is not the bumps, but I have developed a nervous habit of picking at the bumps, which really makes them look terrible! FI is always yelling at me to stop picking, but it's such a hard habit to break!

I have a light case of them, on my upper arms and back. I generally try to use different scrubs but I haven't really used anything that worked particularly well. I can't wait to see what other bees use that does work.

    Hi ladies,

I've always had this on my thighs and arms- fiinally went to the dermatologist, who recommended amlactin xl.  It's over the counter, but behind the pharmacist's counter unlike the regular amlactin that's out on the shelf in places like walgreens.

The xl does work if you use it regularly, but am testing out the regular amlactin now since it's quite a bit cheaper.

Scrubbing harder does NOT work and will only make it worse- you need the special chemicals to get rid of it.

    Good luck! :)

I have heard accutane will get rid of it and it won't come back for years, if ever after treatment.

"Severe cases of KP have been treated with isotretinoin (Accutane) pills for several months. Accutane is generally a very potent oral medication reserved for severe, resistant, or scarring cases of acne. Its use in KP would be considered off-label (not FDA approved) and not routine."

@shinythingsrule:  I think the one I currently have is made my Bare Escentuals... MD something or other.  It works well and doesn't bother my sensitive skin.  My waxer recommended it.  I think it has salicylic acid in it.

Good luck :)  Isn't it nice knowing you aren't the only one dealing with stuff?

Yes, I have this and I hate it!  My dermatologist presecribed a special cream that is 2.5% hydrocortisone in Cetaphil lotion.  It is specially mixed for me at the pharmacist and it WORKS!  If I use it religiously every day after my shower, it takes care of everything.  I have also found that something that works even better and quicker is sun.  I do not tan in a tanning bed, but it is claared up the best after vacations or when I have gotten a good amount of sun (with sunscreen of course).

I have this on my arms and I was determined to get rid of it before my wedding day.  I tried three separate kind of lotions (one prescription), two different scrubs and a few other things to get rid of the redness and bumps and nothing worked for me.  Even the tried and true things that work for most people (like Amlactin lotion and KP Duty scrub and lotion which is made specifically for this problem) did nothing for me.  By the week of the wedding it was maybe even worse than normal. So I just stopped everything and decided to just not worry about it.  On the day of, I brusher mineral power on my arms and lo and behold it looked fine! So I say, don't worry too much about it.  You are probably the only one who will notice and a little makeup can go a long way. ;)

I have it too and my Dermatologist reccomended Akerat Smoothing Exfoliating Cream which is made by Avene. I use all their skin care products for my face and they are wonderful but I havent used this frequently enough to notice a difference yet.
