I've had conversations about him with friends, and here's what I understand: for a lot of people, they don't connect music to the person performing it. So while Chris Brown might be an awful person, someone who likes a song might not realize it's by him or particularly care because they just like the song. I guess it's the same thing as, say, people who choose non-conflict diamonds vs. those who don't really give it much thought.
I barely know who he is and certainly don't know any of his songs. I imagine I'd probably hate them if I heard them, though.
I am in no way condoning violence against anybody ever, but if we stopped listening to music because of the actions or beliefs of the artists, there'd be precious little music left to listen to. Even John Lennon physically abused his first wife. I'm sure I listen to plenty of music that was made by people who have done things I don't agree with, and some who are terrible people. However, I don't often know that about the artist, and sometimes I know but just don't care.
It really all just depends on how strongly you feel about a certain issue or person, I guess.
I don't see the point in boycotting his music. Tons of performing artists have done shitty things but their music is still played all over. Not a big deal to me.
I turn the radio to a different station everytime I hear one of his songs... can't stand him or his music. I understand that lots off artists are not ideal citizens but I make a conscious effort to not support people I know have done horrendous things. I don't begrudge anyone who does like listening to his music though!
Im not gonna support you making millions if I know you are a nutter butter. I particularly dont like him because he seems to have to sense of humility or self. I mean, he named his last album "forgiving all my enemies" Really, negro? You beat women and you want to sit there feeling sorry for your self and be mad at people who dont support your nonsense? Get a clue.
I completely agree that if all these celebrities personal demons came to light, we might have to boycott them all. But I have my vices and violence against women is one of them (a HUGE one) and I have do what I can with what I actively know. Rkelly and Chris Brown are for sure on my do not play list. Ugh. R Kelly, can we have a thread about him?
@natbug21: Exactly this. I used to be a fan of Chris Brown and his music. When I got my iPod, his album was one of the first I purchased. I really liked a number of his songs. When he abused Rihanna, I made the decision to boycott him. I will NEVER purchase any of his music again. I turn the channel when his music comes on. I deleted his music from my iPod.
I won't knowingly support someone who has done something I am completely against, i.e. domestic violence, racism, etc..
I'll still play his music. Celebrities do horrible things all the time but I still watch TV, see their movies, and listen to their music.
It's true, if every atrist was subjected to the same criteria, I'm sure a lot more wouldn't make the cut. For me, I think it was the incredibly public nature of the incident and his subsequent immature behavior that bugs me. If I'm running at the gym and his videos come on, I just have to turn the channel.
For a while I felt negatively about his music after the Rihanna incident happened and I found myself not wanting to listen to it. I realize calling it an "incident" makes it sound very inconsequential, which it was not, but I'm not sure what else to call it. It's not like I was ever a huge fan, but I did know and listen to some of his popular songs. Now, I don't think about it much and I just think about the songs and not necessarily him. And I seriously love "Forever," so I can't see myself ever stopping listening to that song. I understand why people don't like him and refuse to listen to his music, though.
As for the wedding music, I don't think I'd put Chris Brown on a do not play list, but I probably wouldn't request that any of his songs be played, either. Well, okay, maybe I'd ask that "Forever" be played, but that's it.
If you associate a song with the personal life of the musician, then you may as well ban most songs along with it, which leaves you with a very tiny list to choose from.
Pick a song because you like it, not because of what the musician does in their spare time. I can't get into Chris Brown's genre. so it's nothing against him personally, nor is it something our guests listen to, so it likely will not make the cut for that reason.
@Ember78: I'm not going to research every song I listen to to make sure the artist doesn't have any dirt, but if I know someone abused someone or anything else like that, I'm not going to support their music. Chris Brown is a dirt bag and I refuse to support someone who is violently abusive. It's not just chris Brown though, I boycott lots of businesses, etc. when I don't agree with their practices.
I used to feel very strongly about him, and would change the station everytime one of his songs came on, but I think I've moved on now. I haven't decided if I'm ok with him being played at my wedding though.
I hate him. he is just a complete a-hole. I avoid his music.

Has anyone made the conscious choice to avoid his music at your wedding? I ask because over the weekend while out with my FSIL and her husband, at the bar a Chris Brown song came on and they were like, 'This is the song we were announced to!" I immediately thought that I would not want to walk into my reception to a song by a guy who beat the shit out of a woman...but that's just me, maybe I'm holding more of a grudge toward him than others. If the song is great, does it matter? Thoughts, bees?
