Anything elmo is usually a hit! I bought my newphew (he is 32 months) the Rock with me Elmo doll.
They will get enough toys. Start a tradition of buying books. Every child needs to learn to love reading.
I agree! Books, books and more books! Get board books and books that make sounds and/or read the story aloud as well as regular books.
I agree with PPs about books. I have also brought training cups (sippy cups) with the child's fave characters on them, clothes, and child friendly movies.
Look into Melissa & Doug toys. They make a lot of classic wooden toys as well as new modern stuff. We carry it at my work and I love it! So do parents/teachers. Lots of educational learning toys!
I second (third?) books. My little sis is 20 months and she LOVES books. Get the board ones that little fingers won't rip. Her favorite is the hungry little caterpillar, she loves counting the foods and putting her fingers through the holes.
As a mom I agree with Books! My little ones love to read and have WAY too many toys... and i dont know but at this age my kids started getting picky about what they wore. So you could get some really cool character tee shirts My daughter has no objection to getting dressed when she has dora on her shirt!
BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS!!!!!!
also, there are some wooden toys out there that are really cool.
right now, Bed Bath and Beyond has an all-wooden kitchen set that is awesome. not plasticy and cheap looking, super good quality/
My daughter is 18 months and some of her favorite things right now are books, puzzles (Melissa and Doug make some great ones with big knobs), dressing up (she especially loves bracelets, purses, necklaces, tutus, etc...), art supplies (Crayola makes a bunch of awesome prodcuts, but regular old crayons and the Magnadoodle are big hits, too), her shape sorter, and blocks.
ETA: Oh, and stockers! She LOVES stickers. :)
I agree, books or puzzles. I would also love a pass to the zoo or swim classes at the local pool or something that's more of an "activity", too, because I hate clutter and I always feel like my toddler has way too many toys!!
I don't know how much you want to spend (this is about $50), but I got my niece a puzzle stool for Christmas last year (she was 16 months). She is now nearly 2 1/2 and still uses it all the time as a chair as well as a stepstool and still enjoys working the name puzzle.

I am struggling with what to get my 20 month old niece. Parents- what suggestions do you have? Thanks!
