Try something experience based rather than material.  Tickets to an event (cirque du soleil, a broadway show coming to your city, a concert, sports game), a fun athletic outing (lift tickets for your local ski hill), a wine tour, etc.

@musician32992:  I have a similar problem with my parents. The problem with these types of people is that if they want something, they will usually just buy it for themselves! I tend to get my parents sentimental gifts. Last year, I commissioned an illustration of their dog. It didn’t cost me very much money, but they were over the moon with it, haha.
