My niece will be roughly 18 months old this Christmas. The original gift that we were going to get her (a specific kind of Power Wheels) fell through because it’s been discontinued so now it’s back to the drawing board. I like to buy substantial gifts, not just rinky dink toys or outfits so I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas. Any moms out there with kids around her age have some suggestions? What kind of things would you love for your kid to get or what would he/she really enjoy?

Since you’re looking for “substantial” gifts, here are a couple of ideas:
Inflatable bouncy areas like Jumpolene: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2267365′ defer=’defer My kids liked that for a while, I think they got it when they were 3 and 1. Warning though: can be hard to inflate, and storage during winter is a problem unless there’s a place indoors for it. (We eventually threw ours out because it got all grotty from being outside).
A toy kitchen, like this: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11862797′ defer=’defer My kids (especially my girls, but even my son) loved this sort of thing, they just couldn’t get enough of playing kitchen! It may be a tiny bit old for her, it was really when my kids about 2 when they got into it. Also make sure all the parts are large, some kids at 18 months still put things into their mouth.

my daughter is 16 months.. she’ll be right around 18 months at christmas. i’ll tell you where she is developmentally and that will help:
she’s at the age where she’s really starting to use things appropriately. ie her play food she pretends to eat etc. she also is hugging, kissing her stuffed animals and likes to pretend to give them her pacifier.
we’re likely going to get her a doll that she can feed, etc.
my sister wants to get her a doll house.. i think she’s too young but i won’t take that away from her.
have you thought about a full size play kitchen? my daughter would love that if we had the space in our apartment.

@Puffthemagicdragon: I have just been discussing with my SIL about what to get my nephew (will be 3 in January) and niece (just turned 1 yesterday). She suggested that I get a “summer toy” because the kids will be inundated with toys and my brother and her SIL would prefer that they have something new for the Summer months instead of an overload on Christmas Day. I am currently trying to decide between a slide or a good quality paddling pool or sandpit.

Paigers8: She already has one. 🙂
Paula1248 & bbsoon2b: After I posted this, I remembered the play kitchens that I pinned on Pinterest. If I can find the materials, I think I’m going to have a go at one of these. Then I’ll just buy the accessories (pots, pans, food, utensils) to go with it.
Something like this… http://create.northridgepublishing.com/diy-play-kitchen-how-to/
Cariad: That was my plan if we were going to buy the power wheels since she wouldn’t be able to use it until spring time.

I would also recommend getting a Duplo set. My niece got a doll house Duplo set for her birthday which she really loves. And there are also really nice sets of farms or zoos that are less blocks and more animals, so it’s good for younger toddlers. I loved getting duplo sets for my son because it’s really easy to build onto it later.
