Ahh I feel your pain! I started my healthier lifestyle in October 2008 and that was the most BRUTAL holiday season ever. Trying to eat healthier foods while being surrounded by all the delicious goodies wasn't easy.
My best recommendation is to allow yourself a little, it is when we deny ourselves altogether that we often indulge to the point of binging. Also, give yourself a day a week that you can eat anything you want regardless of the diet without guilt. Eventually as your healthier habits become just that, habits, you will find that your cravings for those naugthy foods will diminish. I am three years + in and 120 pounds lighter. Just don't be too hard on yourself!
I cant seem to find the will power I need to stop eating or loose weight and now with the holiday season, it has gotten about 100 x's harder. I need to kick myself into gear and go to the gym.
@luvmyDwight: I was just going to post about that! The holidays are SO difficult for me because not only do I have Thanksgiving, Christmas, and NYE but my birthday, my sister's birthday, an aunt's birthday, a cousin's birthday and my FSIL's birthday are all this month. It's cake city!! I've been working my butt off at the gym and cut calories and so far I have lost 4 pounds in 2 weeks which I am very proud of. BUT thinking about everyone's upcoming b-days and the two holidays give me anxiety. I don't know how I am going to do this :(
You just have to make sure you workout extra and be conscious of what you are eating when tempations are not around. It's ok to give in from time to time and "cheat". If you don't allow yourself to cheat here and there, you will get frustrated, give up, and over indulge.
The week of Thanksgiving was bad for me but since then I've done pretty good. I allow myself one or two hershey kisses per day and on Saturdays my FI and I hit the sushi bar but I only like the rolls. Since they have rice that is my once a week "cheat".
The holidays are rough no doubt. Some mornings I want a hot chocolate sooo bad and for New Years out tradition is to set up a smores station, hot chocolate and a chocolate fountain in our cul de sak for all the neighborhood kids. (I will be cheating big time that night!)
(I am on a no carb no sugar diet.)
As soon as I lose what I want I wil switch to Weight Watchers to keep the weight off.
That's good to allow cheats here and there!! I hope you are being successful with your weight loss goals. I am on a high protein, low carb, no sugar, salt, flour or dairy diet and doing a cleanse right now (only 1.5 days to go and then I can start adding back in some "good carbs like whole grain). I am going to buy some ezekiel pasta tonight for a "cheat" night this weekend!
@luvmyDwight: I found an app on my iphone that helps me out A LOT called My Fitness Pal. It's free and it helps you calculate your calories....you get to eat more when you work out - Score!
A s'mores station, hot chocolate and chocolate fountain? YUM! Yes the holidays are particularly rough. My toughest time is at work, however luckily I am upstairs and the treats here are always in the downstairs kitchen. So as long as I don't go down there, then I am not as tempted. We have an upstairs kitchen where I keep all my lunch stuff, so I don't have to go down there at all.
I don't usually keep sweets at home, but DF loves dessert, so I try to ignore him when he's eating dessert! LOL
It's definitely the worst time of year to be diet conscious! I have been watching calories since the beginning of October, and I've found it to be the easiest to have the mindset of "have what you want when it's a special occasion, but get right back on track the next day". Thanksgiving was pretty brutal, but I was back on track the Monday (ha) after Thanksgiving, and I've continued to lose at a steady rate. I plan on doing the same for the upcoming holiday parties! I think the most important part is allowing yourself to actually ENJOY the holidays, but having the discipline to get back on track when the occasion is over, as opposed to letting the holidays last 12 months a year ;)
I put a photo of me at my heaviest on my phone on an alarm, it goes off every 2 hours lol. Lame I know but it helps me. I only have 5 more weeks til the wedding :)
@Sn2bMrs.B: I have a picture of myself at my heaviest that I keep close when I need motivation, too!
I try to allow myself one small treat a day, that way I don't pig out on a ton of stuff on one day. So far it seems to be working! I try to burn a few extra calories during workout to make up for it!
I completely agree. I try to be good during the day at work and then just splurge at night!
Yeah I'm a low carb dieter (its what works best for me as my body is addicted to carbs).. I told myself that if I did well up to the 24th then I would take the 24th through the 1st off and not feel bad about it. I'd get right back on the 2nd
Yep the seaon is hard. Buttt, so enjoyable. Let yourself indulge, just do a little extra work outs to conteract it. Plus I swear baking burns calories too, haha.
Yep, it's definitely tough. I'm having great success with WW and made it through Thanksgiving just fine. I had a bit of everything (and I mean everything) I wanted and still lost weight. That's my plan for holiday too. Stay strong!!!
And remember our dear friend Kate Moss: Nothing tastes as good as losing weight (okay she says 'being skinny') FEELS!!!!
Ive lost a total of 50lbs by portion control. Dont say NO to yourself, say a BITE, a TASTE, a SMELL. Have you ever smelled something before eating it; try it, sometimes you'll change your mind.
Another tip, drink 1/2 to a FULL bottle of water before eating any meal. Also when FI and I go out to eat now, I always get a 'water cup' and if I crave a sip of soda, I take a sip of his. We also have gotten into the habit of sharing 1 meal! =) Since we've retrained our ways of eating and thinking about eating, we have BOTH lost tons of weight together.
Also we adopted a dog in March, and walking at least 2x a day for 20min definitely has gotten me up and moving!
Again, I do believe in treating ourselves; we all need some motivation!
Seriously I didnt do ANYTHING other than that above, I also have PCOS and that has REALLY helped with all that chaos too!

Here (left: NOW, right: BEFORE) is a picture of me in my dress, that I'm currently still going through alterations due to my weight loss. I get to re-try on the dress as it should fit me, this weekend or next week! =)
@CupCakeMeg: yea not to hijack or something, but WOWZA! YOU GO SISTAH!!!
@luvmyDwight: I can totally relate! hey you are in gilbert, i'm on the phoenix/tempe border. Stay strong, you can do it!!! try myfitnesspal.com its an awesome free site for healthy living and weight loss;) lots of encouragement over there. It has replaced facebook for me! But you CAN DO IT!!! stay strong!
@All In: yeah that's one of my methods as well.. stay good during the week and then at the weekend, I can splurge :) I've also given up soda for the whole month of december and stopped eating bread during the week. save up the empty calories for something really good.. like carrot cake ;)
@Legallyblondiebride: I am on "My Fitness Pal" too!!! I love that website/app!

I have to say I am poop-ing myself about the whole christmas period. I want so much to have that will power, but doubt I will. It's not so much the food but the drinks... I am going back home to the UK and will be celebrating my hen party, christmas, the birth of my niece, school reunion, engagement etc... Actually maybe all the crazy running around may help me....
Christmas is always so tough - I don't think I'm alone in saying my family does most of its celebrating by eating together. And none of us is very small - lol!
When I got engaged, I committed to losing 80 pounds before the wedding. Sounds crazy, right? It's definitely going to be tough and require megacommitment but it's not impossible or unhealthy. I started on November 1, 2011 at 270lbs (cringe) and am currently around 255 - so about 15 pounds in six weeks, plus I've already lost 10.5 inches off my waist and hips. SOOOO happy!!
I'm really proud of what I've accomplished so far and I really don't want to backtrack over the holidays and have to re-lose weight I already lost, ya know? So I've given myself 5 "free" days over my two weeks off from work for the holidays. I'm still going to track what I ate and make sure to get as much exercise as the hectic schedule will allow but I'm not going to deny myself treats that I love and have already not touched in almost two months (by the time Dec.24 rolls around). I've also decided that I'm ok if I gain back up to 3 pounds over the holidays - I'm 3 pounds ahead of schedule anyways so I figure that's like a freebie.
Good luck to us all - the holidays are the most delicious time of the year!
@CupCakeMeg: Way to go!! Amazing! I was at 213, I'm at 138 now! All bc of exercise and portion control! But a girls gotta have her chocolate!

Especially with this in the house!
and two older kids who can eat anything and I cook for. Not to mention making Christmas cookies and all the parties. YIKES!
Any one else feeling like Thanksgiving and Christmas season are the hardest time to diet?
