Do you get any annual bonuses/gifts from your employer? I am not talking about merit-based bonuses, but rather a Christmas bonus or annual "Thanks for being part of the team" bonus? Do you get it for Christmas, end of year, or both? Do you think it is inappropriate to give a bonus based on a religious holiday in the workplace? How much is it (if you are comfortable saying)?
ETA: I co-own a small business, and we are having a disagreement about year-end bonuses. The debate is whether we give a Christmas bonus (same amount for everyone) AND a year-end bonus (based on how long you have been with the company) or JUST a year-end bonus. Are they both a way of saying "Thanks for being with us another year"? Also, there is disagreement over whether there should be a CHRISTMAS bonus. The issue stems from the fact that we occasionally get the staff a free catered lunch and during Lent, we had some lunches on Fridays without meat, and a few staff were upset we "pushed religion down their throat."
I get zip! I'm a teacher and FI is self-employed so we're doing ok...but no "extras".
We get a bottle of any kind of alcohol. I work for a very small company. So depending on what it is the dollar amount would be different. No matter what we get, it's definitely not enough! I am thankful for my bottle of Jack though...
I could see where a Holiday Bonus would be the more appropriate wording. I quit my job a month ago and my old bosses still sent me a holiday bonus and I am still invited to the Christmas party. They just sold the place but the new year is when everyone got their raises.
I am a full time nanny and I generally get a Christmas bonus that is equal to one weeks pay. I am working for a new family though, and in a new state, so we will see what happens this year.
DH gets a raise on January 1st. Other than that, nothing. Technically, he is eligible for bonuses for completing certain things, but they are getting rarer these days.
My bonus is my 12 day vacation over Christmas and New Years. Yay for teacher schedules!! It makes up for the crappy pay the rest of the year... ;-)
For the past two years I've received an end of the year bonus equal to approximately 1 month net pay along with a merit based raise, (average of 6%). We'll see what happens this year.
Lol, this year I get a turkey from my job. My husband works at the same place as me now, so we will have two turkeys. No idea how to cook one lol.
At the job I worked at for 6 years before that, we would get a candle. One of the ones we sold for $10. Awesome :P
I've gotten small gifts from a temp job I worked at and gift cards from my last job. I made out like a bandit!
I work for the government, so we definitely don't get any sort of bonuses at all. But I used to work for a very small law firm (four attorneys and one paralegal) and I got a holiday gift (a gift card for a spa massage!) and a bonus which was about $1,000. I definitely miss that, but I love my current job so I guess it's worth it. (:
I work at a private school, so we usually get a Christmas bonus from the PTO. Last year, we even got a Thanksgiving bonus!
@piglet_625: 12 day vacation! No fair! My school gets Dec 24-Jan 2 off this year. SOOOO short!
I would love a Christmas bonus and Lent lunches-- but I'm Catholic so I'm probably not a good help. Perhaps ask your staff what they'd like if they're disliking the religion? Or what they'd like instead throughout the year or for other religious holidays if they practice something else?
we receive bonuses early december (Sept is our end of financial year) providing a number of set financial reporting criteria is met
meaning not making budget/ebita/sales ect and job performance = no bonus
Nada for me, but I work for a government funded non profit. And my SO gets nothing as well, he teaches undergrad courses while getting his masters degree. Perhaps once we both get our graduate degrees and have better jobs.....
@TheMrs2013: Haha, well... my school does too, which is still 10 days counting the weekends, but I am taking the 23rd off, and don't work on Tuesdays, so for me it's 12. Still, I always count the weekends.
@jessjess: This is the exact situation I am in, I am a nanny, with a new family this year in a new state :)
I get an end of year bonus although my boss likes to put the check in a christmas card for me. Although I guess it is somewhat merit based. Its part of my contract that my compensation is a combination of salary and year-end bonus based on how well the firm as a whole is doing and my work. The amount is incredibly varied based on how we do.
Year 1- 10% of salary
Year 2- 80% of salary
Year 3- 8% of salary
So um... yep. It varies :)
pinklemonade12 I don't mean to go off topic here but the easiest way to cook a turkey is in an oven bag. I just cooked one yesterday, it was the easiest and no clean up!!! Works for me!!! 23lb bird in 3 hours, not to bad.
Ok, back to bonuses. :D
My company does annual raises in July after our reviews, but no year-end bonuses :(
I work in a research lab at a big University... we get nothing. Just a Christmas party. BUT we get the week between Christmas and New Years off plus usually 1 more day around that time if the calendar works in our favor.
In high school and college I worked part time as a server in a nursing home and you'd end up with a couple hundred extra bucks and a turkey and chocolate, etc. as a holiday bonus, which was pretty sweet for only working part time.
Last year I got like $25 and a card... I'm not sure if that counts as a bonus, haha.
We get quarterly bonuses of $1,200 if certain budgets are met. Just got my 4th quarter bonus on my check today!! Just in time to spoil my 3 yr old DD for xmas!!
Hmm. No end of the year bonus.
My husband gets a monthly bonus, 200 some dollars at the first of each month. So it does add up after 12 months. I don't know what it is called exactly though.
I get bup kiss! Im a teacher too. And i hate when people get all stupid about someone trying to respect another persons religion. While I don't think there would have been anything wrong with including SOME meat dishes during lent ( as a catholic I wouldn't have cared..I would have cared more if there wasnt ANYTHING withOUT meat), I dont think it is fair to say religion was shoved down their throats either. And looking at the poll, looks like most people dont get bonuses so your staff should be grateful that they do.
BUT
to try to impart an opinion i guess two bonuses would be psychologically better than just one:)
Last year I got a bonus from the university newspaper where I work as news editor.. apparently at the deli where I work at, we are going to be getting bonuses. I'm hoping for both bonuses.
I get my bonus at the end of Febuary. It is based on our companies finanical results and my performance. it is generally around 10% of my salary.
I work for a really large financial firm and I get an end of year bonus (at the end of Jan). No Christmas bonus, my manager usually takes me out to lunch and there are multiple corporate holiday parties.
We get a christmas bonus, the amount depends on how well the company did that year. Last year we got $5,000. The year I started everyone but me (because I only started a couple weeks earlier) got a $10,000 bonus.
When I worked at a hospital my bonus was 100-200. However, now that I'm a teacher... I get no bonus. :/ BUT, I am off from 12/18-1/8. So I consider that a definite perk.
last year i got a $50 christmas bonus.
this year we aren't getting anything.
bah humbug.
This will be my 4th Christmas season with my company. The 1st year we got a $500 Christmas bonus, the 2nd year I got a bottle of perfume, the 3rd year we got NOTHING. Maybe I'll be docked pay this year!
@MissDareDevil: Ditto on the Bah Humbug.
I have got a $50 dollar gift card the past 4 years.... They are getting cheaper and cheaper every year so it mght not be that this time around.
This is actually the first company I have worked for that has given any sort of bonus. Year end or Christmas so I feel really happy to receive ANYTHING. We haven't gotten our bonuses yet so I'm not sure how genrous it is, but since I'm used to getting nothing anything will be great.
At my current job, I get a year end bonus that gets paid in my April 15th paycheck (they keep pushing the date back every year so eventually I will go an entire year without one, lol!). It is a combination of merit based and how well my department performes. So basically, if our group does well based on the entire country's results, then we get X amount for a bonus pool, then it's divided up based on performance within the team and I'm sure other factors like who got a big bonus last year, who makes more money to begin with, who has one foot out the door, etc.
At my old job strangely enough I just got a Christmas bonus, but I think I was jipped on the year end bonus because I was so low on the totem pole. I've never had it written into an offer letter or employment contract that I was guaranteed to get a bonus, so it's always been up to the discretion of my boss/company.
My bonuses have never been big, the largest one I've ever gotten was $3,800. But that's honestly okay with me because as long as I'm getting a decent salary increase that's all I care about. I almost worked for a company who guaranteed me at least a 40% of salary bonus every year but no raises. I would totally take the raise any day.
Although it's right around the holidays I consider it more of a "year end" bonus than a "Christmas" bonus.
