@ChuckNorris:  I had the Mirena for 8 months, but it didn’t work out for me. The hormones even low were not meshing well with my body.

Ok now to hopefully give you some helpful answers:

I know there are a LOT of bees out there that have IUDs. How’d it go? What do you recommend me to do beforehand and after? It was pretty damn painful for me. If felt like it took forever to be inserted. After the insertion I felt very light headed and like I was going to fall lol I know so dramatic. Take some ibuprofen or something beforehand BUT my sister who has children said it didn’t hurt. She said there was some pressure but no pain so that answers the dialation question as well. I have never had a dilation or children so that’s probably why it was so painful for me.

1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? I would say 8/9. When I think back I try to kid myself into thinking it didn’t hurt much but no I’m lying to myself it was very painful for me. Like I said above though, my sis felt like it was a easy peasy so if you’ve been dilated before it’ll probably be easy for you. I think I just have a low pain tolerance.
1-10 on the pain scale after? If I remember correctly I was just light headed and had some cramping. Once it’s done it’s not too bad just some cramping. I took the day off work just in case the cramps got too bad I didn’t have to deal with work stuff while I was in pain.
Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? Why?I got the Mirena so the hormonal IUD. I have crazy heavy periods and both myself and my Dr thought it would be help in having easier periods. The Paraguard is believed to make periods heavier for the first few months and mine being the way they are I figured they would make mine worse.
How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? They became lighter but I had spotting on a lot of random days.
How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after?  The procedure lasted I think about 5 mins? I don’t remember exactly but it felt like an eternity. I did not return to work. While the cramps were bad they were something I would rather deal with while in bed relaxing.
Were you crampy the next day? What should I anticipate the next day? I was a little crampy but my sister who got the non hormonal one had cramps for a few days.
What about SEX? Sex was good but apparently my SO would feel the string.

Ok that was long but I think that was it. Good luck on your appointment and I hope the IUD works for you 🙂

What do you recommend me to do beforehand and after? I had a mild sedative and I think that really helped with my nerves but it was still painful.

Have you have kids/cervical dilation? No

Was insertion THAT painful? Yes! It hurt more like a lot of pressure

1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? 6

1-10 on the pain scale after? I had really bad cramping for the first week but it got better after 3 weeks.

Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? Why? With, it’s what my doctor recommended.

How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? Before I had a ton of cramping and wasn’t very regular, I wasn’t one any kind of bc for about 8 months beforeit so couldn’t find anything I liked. Now I don’t have periods and I love it!!!!

How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after? About 40 mins, I came in they gave me my sedative and I waited until it kicked in then the procedure took about 5-10 mins. I didn’t return to work.

Were you crampy the next day? What should I anticipate the next day? Pain!!!! It hurt so bad the next day, I took a painkiller and slept all day.

What about SEX? we waited 3-4 weeks I think can’t really remember now. at first my FI could feel the strings but a year and a half later he can’t.

Do you love it? You happy? Would you get another one? I looooove mine and will get another when I need to get a new one! it sucked at first but now it’s way worth it!

Im on my phone sorry for bad typing!

Glad someone asked this, I’m thinking of getting a mirena.

For what it’s worth, my mum had one a few years ago and said it actually wasn’t all that painful when it was being inserted. About the same as laser hair removal down below. I would choose the hormonal one since it makes periods lighter and being on the pill worked for me (similar hormones).

I have a mirena so I guess it might be different, but I’ll answer your questions for my experience:

I know there are a LOT of bees out there that have IUDs. How’d it go? What do you recommend me to do beforehand and after?  Definitely take some Advil or something similar, and you might want a heating pad to help with the cramping, so make sure you get one.

Have you have kids/cervical dilation? No

Was insertion THAT painful? No, it really wasn’t. It hurt, but I had gallstones and it was less than half the pain of that. Also, it really doesn’t last that long. It’s over pretty quickly.

1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? 6
1-10 on the pain scale after? 4

Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? Why? With hormones, because I have a really heavy period and I was afraid of all the stories about how the copper IUDs make your period heavier. The draw of possibly having no period was too great. I was afraid of the hormones, though, because I didn’t have a good experience on the pill. I tried 3 different ones and they all gave me depression/anxiety (too bad I didn’t figure that out until after college…) SO far, though, I haven’t had any effects from the hormones in the IUD since it’s localized and smaller.

How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? Pre IUD my periods were pretty heavy. Post IUD they are a lot lighter, but I am constantly spotting. I bled lightly for the first month or so. I only got it in September, though, so I am willing to deal with 6 months of spotting/light bleeding for 4 years of no period. I got a Diva Cup, which helped a lot since I didn’t have to worry about changing my tampon or whether I would start bleeding randomly.

How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after? I worked after I got it, but I was working from home so that didn’t really matter. It took about 15 minutes. If you work in a job where you are going to have to move around a lot, I’d take the rest of the day off.

Were you crampy the next day? Yes, but better than the night before. They would come and go, but nothing I couldn’t work through. It was kinda like… Cramp. Okay, take a deep breath, it’s not that bad. Cramp goes away, continue with life.

What should I anticipate the next day?  Based on my experience, you should anticipate some random bad cramps throughout the day.

What about SEX? Sex was fine as soon as the cramping stopped, because I wasn’t in the mood with the cramps. The first time he could feel the strings, but they softened and curled up really quickly, so he didn’t feel them after the first week or so.

Do you love your IUD? You happy? Would you get another one? I would absolutely get another one. I don’t have to remember to take anything or carry anything with me, and the hormones are very localized. I am extremely happy with it. I am protected from pregnancy, which would be inconvenient for me right now, and don’t have to worry about it.

I just saw your update that you’re expecting to return to work, and really, you should be fine as long as you can take a break every now and then if you get a really bad one. They only lasted for like… 30 seconds for me. Make sure you have a bottle of advil, though, and keep taking it.

I know there are a LOT of bees out there that have IUDs. How’d it go? What do you recommend me to do beforehand and after?  Take advil or something before & after.

Have you have kids/cervical dilation? No

Was insertion THAT painful? No, the NP measured my uterus hurt. It felt like I was being poked.

1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? 3

1-10 on the pain scale after? 1, I was just achy. I took some advil and it was gone the next morning.

Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? Why? With, I wanted my periods to go away.

How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? Pre were just average and now I have none! I spotted for the first 6 months and now I haven’t had one in 3 years.

How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after? I got it at 3pm and I think it took an hour in total (including waiting room time). I went back to work the next day.

Were you crampy the next day? no

What should I anticipate the next day? Just spotting.

What about SEX? It’s the same as before.

Do you love your IUD? You happy? Would you get another one? I’ve had mine almost 4 years and I would get another Mirena. I’ve had no side effects. I’ve heard the bleeding is much worse with the copper IUD than the Mirena.

ok, here goes:

What do you recommend me to do beforehand and after? well i took vicadin before but it didn’t help at all. i believe you can ask them to use a numbing gel but i didn’t know that when i got mine inserted. afterwards, rest & heating pads!

Have you have kids/cervical dilation? nope. i had a colposcopy that hurt like a bitch and i’d say this was about as painful.

Was insertion THAT painful? YES!!

1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? 12

1-10 on the pain scale after? 8/9 for the rest of the day and then it went down to a 6 the next day and 0 after that.

Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? Why? with hormones. i didn’t want to get heavier periods and the mirena has such a low hormone level that i wasn’t worried about it.

How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? i was on the pill for 13 years before so my periods were light to normal. after insertion, i didn’t have a period for 2 years. i just got mine out last month after 2 1/2 years and got a period within 4 days. ugh

How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after? it didn’t take long. less than 5 minutes i think. i did not go back to work. i wasn’t planning to anyways and i’m really glad because i was in a lot of pain after. i had mine done on a friday so i had the weekend ot rest.

Were you crampy the next day? yes

What should I anticipate the next day? cramping. i can’t remember if i spotted.

What about SEX? i didn’t have sex for a couple weeks because it took me awhile to get used to the idea that there was something inside me. after that, sex was normal. my DH could feel the string for awhile but it softened up over time and then he didn’t notice it. don’t have them cut the string too short. it makes getting it out harder. my co-worker had hers too short and it took over 10 minutes to get it out. mine took 2 seconds (it didn’t hurt getting it out).

Do you love your IUD? You happy? Would you get another one? i loved it! i had it taken out so we can start TTC but i will be getting another one after we have a baby.

How’d it go? I can’t tell you it was a walk in the park because it was pretty painful for me. But, I don’t regret it at all.

What do you recommend me to do beforehand and after? Take ibuprofen or tyelnol or whatever you would normally take over the counter for pain 30 minutes before your appointment.

Have you have kids/cervical dilation? Nope

Was insertion THAT painful? It was painful for me. But, I’ve never had anything done to my cervix.

1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? 8

1-10 on the pain scale after? 8

Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? With

Why? That’s what was recommended to me by my doctor.

How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? They were average. Afterwards, I have had my period once since I got it inserted.

How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after? I think about an hour? I went to work afterwards (which was a mistake)

Were you crampy the next day? Slightly.

What should I anticipate the next day? Just spotting.

What about SEX? At first, SO could feel the strings which made sex super uncomfortable for him. So, at my follow up appointment I had my doctor trim the strings a little more.

Do you love your IUD? You happy? Would you get another one? Yes I love it! I have the Mirena and have had no side effects. After I take this one out and have babies, I will get another one.

How’d it go? Overall-pain wise I’d say a 7/10. I bled after and had the worst cramps. I was on the floor screaming. The first 24 hours was the worst. After that it was just like a bad period. I took no pain meds and I should have gotten that Vicoden the doc gave me a perscription for.

What do you recommend me to do beforehand and after?
Have you have kids/cervical dilation? Yes, just one
Was insertion THAT painful? Yes. It sucked ass.
1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? 6 when they jammed it in there
1-10 on the pain scale after? 8 the first 24 hours, after that about a 5
Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? Why? Without. It’s good for 12 years and I like that.
How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? pre iud they were light -to medium, 4 days every 30 days. Post they are extreamly heavey, last for 7 days, and are kind of all over the place.
How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after? it took 10 minutes and then I went home for the rest of the day.
Were you crampy the next day? Yes. A LOT.
What should I anticipate the next day?
What about SEX? not for 3-4 days. My vagina was angry with me
Do you love your IUD? You happy? Would you get another one?
I love it. It’s fan-freaking tastic. I never have to worry about condoms or pills or hormones. The bleeding sucks, but unwanted babies would suck more. The certainty is worth the pain.

Hey! i got mine about 2.5 years ago. LOVE IT!!!

Have you have kids/cervical dilation? No

Was insertion THAT painful? Prob a 7 – pretty bad! I took 4 ibuprofen plus a muscle relaxant beforehand. my doc said I seemed to handle it better than the vast majority of her patients. Highly recommend painkillers!

1-10 on the pain scale during insertion? 7, but just for a minute

1-10 on the pain scale after? 2-6 (waves of cramps with periods of time that were fine)

Did you get an IUD with or without hormones? Why? W.o.  Tired of hormones after 10 years of birth control, even though I didn’t have any bad side effects.

How are your periods pre- and post-IUD? Now vs BC: longer, heavier, more pms cramping. Certainly bearable and waaaaay worth it! Cramps are perfectly manageable with Advil. These side effects were the worst for about 6 months after and are minimal now.

How long did the procedure take from start to finish and did you return to work after? Took 45 min for the whole doc visit. Did NOT return to work – was badly crampy in spurts and did not feel like working. I woul highly recommend just taking the day off. You never know how your body will respond. You want to option to curl up with a hot water pillow and feel crappy.

Were you crampy the next day? What should I anticipate the next day? Crampy but not too bad. Take 3-4 ibuprofen a couple times and you’ll be fine.

What about SEX?  Sex is great – my libido is better w.o birth control. At first my FI could feel the little wire because it sticks straight out of your cervix. After a while of getting bumped into, it will wrap around your cervix and not be noticeable. No biggie.

Do you love your IUD? You happy? Would you get another one? It’s awesome. Good for 10 years, never have to think about birth control, no yucky hormones.

Advice: DON’T OVERTHINK THIS! You’ll be fine. It hurts like a bitch going in, but its just for a little while. Load up on ibuprofen for a couple days and it will be a-ok. Good luck! Welcome to the club 🙂

As everybody else she’s said, it’s pretty damn painful! I think I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but I have been holding the pain I suffered over my now husband’s head since I got it inserted five years ago! Expect pain, and take the rest of the day off work if you can!

That being said, it is so worth it! I hate hormonal contraceptive, it makes me really depressed and I become a pyscho bitch! So other pill is a big no no!

my periods didn’t hurt that much mo than before, and were maybe a bit heavier for the first few months, but settled down quickly. I was getting three day periods as usual.

the only thing is that they are really irregular!

anyway, getting it taken out isnt painful at all!

Good luck
