That's my birthday!! The parties are always extra fun!!
I think a cinco de mayo wedding would be a blast! so many fun bright colors, amazing food, and Margaritas!!! you got my stamp of approval too! hehe
That would be the coolest birthday! If it had to be a holiday, that would be my choice. haha. What's REALLY funny is that the bottom of my dress is organza. :) HOW did I not think of this before?? haha.

You should go for it! One of my cousins had a post-wedding reception b/c they were married in Mexico. The wedding theme was "fiesta" or something of that nature. They had a margarita fountain (instead of a chocolate fountain), which I thought was pretty cool!
@JoJo Bananas: Ahh great idea!
And I'm doing a happy dance because FI thinks it's awesome too! I knew I loved that man for a reason. ;)
And to everyone else: My head is exploding with color ideas right now! haha.
Super fun idea!! I love it! You could have a great vibrant color scheme!
@Georgia Bee: I would love to! ;) We'll see how the budget goes. ;
@peachplum09: I think that's my favorite part! I was kind of sad with my other date (Feb 2012) and when I saw this I got so excited!
Teal, earth-tones, yellow. :)
@AmeliaBedelia: It is the best birthday!!! OOOOh see!! your dress screams cinco de mayo wedding!!! do it! do it! do it!!!
@jillieb: Right?? I almost slipped up and mentioned that to FI when I was describing it...but I saved it. :) He doesn't know what the dress looks like. But he agreed!
To all bees who have commented -- We are doing it!!!!!!
Anyone have any ideas?
Ok so I was at work today and we unpacked these pillows and I immediately thought of your wedding, so I had to share

Oh, what FUN!! I saw these online and thought they were great ideas. I love the multiple colored linens and the cute paper mache' items on the chairs. Wouldn't that be neat, instead of chair covers/bows? How cute is the cake below with the mini flag/banner? And the picado invites...how perfect?!
@jillieb: That is adorable - how much? Lol
@melisslp: Oh wow I LOVE that decor and that cake. I wonder what it would look like square, with maybe black ribbon around the bottom of the tiers?
And those invites are awesome! Where did you find them?
@AmeliaBedelia: Isn't it?!? I think it was like 29ish...
ETA: But, even if you didn't use that pillow, you could make tissue paper pomanders that look similar!!
one small request - remember that cinco de mayo celebrates the battle of Puebla. :-)
So glad you like the ideas! I love your idea about the cake! I would talk to the baker that you guys choose and see if they think that would be something they could do. Unfortunately, I can't find the link to the invites I posted (it was just someone's picture on Flikr). Here are a few websites that have them:

http://www.senorsenora.com/tag/mexican/
http://www.custompaperworks.com/2010/01/papel-picado-invitations-for-wedding-in-mexico/
I LOVE this idea!
Casual but classy, and you have so many awesome bright color schemes to work with. I say go for it!!
@FranksMama: When Mexico beat the French, yes? I may need to Google and make sure I've got my facts straight. I could put something in our programs! :)
@jillieb: I love the idea of similar looking pomanders. It would be adorable.
@melisslp: You are AMAZING. I love the teal ones. My favorite color. :) I really like the fourth link too.
@Stumptown Lady: :) I love that almost everyone thinks it's awesome as much as I do! :) haha
@Amelia - Awww...that was super nice of you to say! I actually love helping future brides out with this stuff. I'm hoping one day to maybe get in the biz a bit (since I am off during the summers). Glad you liked a couple of the programs!!
P.S. I saw this and thought of you. I think the colored vases with a single (gerbera) daisy are gorgeous!!
Mexican blankets or Spanish scarves would look pretty cool on the tables!

@melisslp: You're very helpful. :) I've seen some of your suggestions for SoontobeMrsA's carnival wedding. I'm super thrilled that you're interested in mine! I think you should definitely consider it, you seem to have a way with the internet. lol.
I found this yesterday, it has the blankets on the tables. I'd like to do it but not on a long table.

@Amelia - I wish I would've known how to navigate the web as well as I do now. I'm sure my wedding decor' would've been more unique and creative! I just LOVE your idea and soontobemrsa's! You will, without a doubt, have a wedding that everyone will enjoy and remember!! I really, really like the table ideas that we've both located. The color will be amazing in your photos!! (If I come up with anything else, I'll be sure to contact you). Cheers!
I'm sure it was beautiful anyways! I don't know that I've ever seen pictures. I have seen your dress though and it was beautiful!
Keep 'em coming if you so desire - we've got plenty of time though. :) I'm sure this'll come back up for me later this year.
So much fun, I love it! I love all things Mexican and my DH is old-punk-rock and loves anything with skeletons! We had a rustic wedding, but included some other aspects of our personality with this cake topper and bunting for behind the cake table!

@VagabondGurl: Ah that is so neat!
The one thing I'm worrying over is being "too theme-y" and having people think it's silly or over the top. I'm trying to think of a lot of subtle ways to incorporate it so we have the feel while it still feels like a wedding.
Just to let you know-if you need Cinco de Mayo wineglasses, dishware, etc. Check out DollarTree.com right now!!!
@creativeplannertobee: Thank you :) Those wine glasses are so cute!
@AmeliaBedelia: I totally get that. Our "theme" was rustic and had a lot of trees... we really only had those two elements of Mexicana in our wedding - so it wasn't overdone or "in your face" - just a right amount for us!
Perhaps using talavera on your tables, like water pitchers or vases, filled with beautiful colorful flowers. That would add a nice hint.
@VagabondGurl: Yeah, my dress has a cool organza Mexicana-ish feel to it at the bottom. We are thinking black bm dresses with a brightly colored shoe. I think we can get away with 3 bright colors (maybe teal, red and orange/yellow?) to give it that feel as well. I think the food would have to be Mexican dishes because....otherwise it would feel bi-polar. Like, Italian food at a Cinco de Mayo wedding? LOL. And the Margarita Bar is a must. Mom said so. ;) hahah.
I really like that idea about the flowers; it will feel fresh and lively without being "too" anything. I'm so excited!! Haha.
I love the idea. I dream of a mariachi band starting up singing and playing as we come back up the aisle after the service! I also love the colors, skirts, etc. Check out offbeatbride.com, I am SURE there are some mexican themed weddings, definitely many day of the dead/dia de los muertos. Have fun with your wedding plans! If people don't like it, it's their loss. I think it's awesome!
@julies1949: Right? I saw that pic and was like "Yes. Exactly. You get it." haha. I'm not sure if we'll keep it to two colors or so, or if we'll say screw convention and have all the BMs and GMs in diff colors. :) We shall see.
@mermaideve: Thank you. :) So far I have had mostly positive feedback. We haven't really started planning too much yet. Thanks for the suggetion, now I must go stalk offbeatbride again.
Just wanted to add a few thoughts in:
With my husband being Mexican, and me being Mexican-Italian-American, it was important to us to incorporate some Mexican touches without it being theme-y, like you said.
So a couple of ideas to add some authenticity without being cheesy:
1) definitely go with papel picado, but maybe single color strands? Some strands all white and some all red or all yellow or all teal?and they make such an impact when they're hung in bunches, meaning strand behind strand behind strand.
2) doilies. seriously. maybe not generally considered Mexican but every Mexican I know (which is a bunch) loves doilies.
3) loteria table numbers. loteria is Mexican bingo and they make these great loteria cards with different pictures of things or people. I think someone already posted a picture of them, but if not just google loteria. Instead of having a number, each table could have a different loteria card.
hmmm...if I think of any more ideas, I'll let you know. Someone else had posted a picture of the skeleton cake toppers. They have a bunch of different designs. We used one and I loved it. I bought it when I was in Mexico last, so I'm not totally sure where you get them in the States...
pm me though if you have any questions and I'd be more than glad to help out! Or if you wanna put anything into Spanish, my husband and I could definitely help translate too. i just did a super cute invitation for my cousin's quinceanera with English in teal and Spanish in red in two different fonts. She loved it.
@AmeliaBedelia: I was going through my starred threads on Google reader and thought of you today. Have you seen this DIY from http://greenweddingshoes.com/diy-papel-picado-flags/ ?

@pink.sequins: I just saw you put this on my other newer post - thanks!!
@ayguera: Is there a way that I should hang papel picado? Or is there a wrong way to do it? Just wondering. I was thinking of doing a red strand and a teal strand. And thank you so much for your input on both this thread and the other! I think it would be cute to translate parts of the invites and maybe do some Mexican/Cinco de Mayo history in our programs, and might be hitting you up for some Spanish translation. :) PLEASE stick around! ;) haha
I am also having Cinco de Mayo wedding reception! We are getting married in Feb in Las Vegas and then our reception is back home on Cinco de Mayo. There are so many ideas out there for this and it is SO much fun because of all of the fun colors. I was warned not to make it TOO much because it can go from being tasteful to tacky very quickly, but if you just keep that in mind when you are planning, you will be fine! The papel picado invites that were posted are AWESOME! I would love those or something similar!
I am getting married on May 5, 2012 in Maryland. My fiance and I picked May 5th, 2012 without even realizing that it was Cinco de Mayo. We are having a traditional ceremony/reception with a Mexican Cinco de Mayo theme. Our colors are tangerine and yellow. We are having a local Mexican restaurant cater the reception and will incorporate Mexican decorations into the ceremony and reception such as somberos and mexican blankets in our centerpieces. Our main flower is the gerber daisy which also comes in orange and yellow. I think that we are also going to get the personalized paper banners as well. I would like to exchange ideas!

So I was just on another thread that was talking about "fun and classy" weddings. JennyW1 posted a link to this blog:
http://chartreuselove.blogspot.com/2010/05/cinco-de-mayo-wedding-ideas.html
And I sort of fell in love with it. :) Cinco de Mayo is on a Saturday next year...so I'm in the process of getting FI to agree with it. MOH and Mom already put their stamp of approval on the idea, but FI is at work. LOL.
Anyways, do any bees have any experience or any other thoughts/ideas on this concept?? I think it would be so much fun! Besides, who doesn't love a margarita. ;)
