If we’re planning to get married legally this September before deployment and have a ceremony next year when he gets back, what is the social norm for bridal showers and such? Has anyone else had to deal with this?

The social norm is that the shower is held before the legal ceremony. Anything following is considered a renewal of vows and is deceptive to call it the actual wedding.

@Ember78: this. Your wedding is in September and bridal showers and whatnot are traditionally held before the wedding.

I’ve heard of ceremonies that follow a legal wedding being called a “marriage blessing ceremony” — a renewal of vows seems like something that should be done many years after a marriage.
