Dear bees, I am searching for an officiant – a judge or justice of the peace to conduct our ceremony. I know there are non-denomenational reverends/pastors out there, however, we are looking to have a very simple and totally civil ceremony. Any recommendations?
Thanks a lot!

Check with City Hall for a list of officiants. What kind of ceremony are you looking for? Are you looking for a personalized ceremony at all? You may want to check out Celebrants – many who work out of NYC are ministers (like myself), but it’s simply the legal action we need to take so we can officiate at weddings… it’s a completely civil ceremony, based on your expectations and whatever you’d like to include. I’ve done a ton of civil / completely religion free weddings (in fact.. most of my weddings are like that), but are still relevant, personal, and meaningul.
You can learn more about Celebrants at http://www.celebrantusa.org or feel free to PM if you have any questions or want any specific reccomendations.

My cousin is an ordained minister. I asked him to become one since my fiance and I are having a very small ceremony/reception. I thought it would be nice to have someone who knows us very well to perform the ceremony. Plus he and I are very close and I couldn’t see someone I didn’t know very well marrying us. If there is someone you are very close to, you could always ask them to do the same.

Hi! I know you’re not looking for a reverend – neither were FH and I. Neither of us is religious at all, and we wouldn’t really identify with any mentions of religion. That being said, the officiant we’re going with is a reverend. He walked us through his “standard” ceremony, and it worked well for us. He also officiated at my friend’s wedding, and I believe Mrs. Butterfly’s wedding as well. His name is Jim Covington – I’d suggest him if that seems like something you’d be comfortable with.
