What about an iPod wedding like several people on here have done for your entertainment
I've gotta say that a live band (if they're an good, at least) will almost always cost more than a DJ. From my experience as a musician who plays a lot of weddings, I can tell you that each individual musician will expect at least $100 just for showing up and playing at all, plus more money depending on how long they are expected to play. For a group of four, for example, you can expect to pay $500 for an hour or two of music... and I'm guessing you want more than that, right?
Sorry I can't be more helpful--I'm in Indiana, so I can't give you any location-specific suggestions. I'd go with the iPod (with a trusted friend "operating" it) if you are trying to save money.
Try Lettuce Cater at www.lettucecater.com. You can email Jules at info@lettucecater.com for more information. They have an ala carte menu for options and they have wonderful drop-off menus that will help you stay within budget. The have both hot and cold appetizer options from around 2.75 per person. I would suggest just emailing Jules and letting them know what you are looking to spend and how many people you need to feed. Ask if they have any suggestions for you.
For music, you could try www.ozzyharris.com. I heard him the other day playing at Bd's Mongolian Grill in Burnsville, MN. He plays there on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. He is great. He plays and sings current songs. His rates are as follows: $60/hr. for a two hour show (two 50 mn. sets), and $50/hr. for a three hour show (three 50 mn. sets).
Hope this helps!

Hey girls,
We have our venue booked for June 2011 (An outdoor terrace overlooking the St. Croix river in Stillwater)...but I am at a loss as to what to do for food since we're on such a low budget. What I would like is a classy cocktail/hor dourve type of reception with an appetizer bar of some sort. Does anyone know of a caterer that is affordable and could pull something like this off? Or am I dreaming?
Also, to help keep within the budget we'd also like to skip the DJ (another reason is because music has to stop at 10 pm because its in a residential area)...do you have any ideas of alternative entertainment? I think a jazz band would be classy and go with the cocktail party theme, but I don't want my guests to be bored and leave as soon as they eat. Any ideas would be appreciated...I know I have lots of time to plan, but I'm lost!
