Do any bees have a cleaning lady?

With working full time and a lot of other commitments I would like to have someone come in once a week of once every other week. I got a quote of $80 per week, My house is 1400 sq ft 1.5 baths/ 3 bedrooms. Is this reasonable? What do you pay if you have someone?

I actually just started cleaning for a lady. She pays me $75 dollars each time.  I am not sure of the sq. footage of her house, but this is what I clean:

Master Bathroom & Bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, side room off their living room with a pool table, the 2nd bathroom and her office.

It takes me about 3 hours (probably less now that I have done it once and know my way around pretty good) So it averages 25 an hour. Which I think is pretty good.

You might want to put an ad on sittercity.com. That is where I found her job listing. =)

    Good Luck!

This sounds about what my mum pays her cleaning lady for 4 hours.  But being in the UK I don't know what the going rate is with you.

    Thanks girls!

I just hate to spend money when I can do something myself but I find that I am really running myself too thin lately. With two dogs with double coats I am exhausted.

We have someone that comes once per month for a deep clean and our place is 2000sqf, 3 BR, 3BA, and an office and I pay her 100 bucs for that once a month.  We pickup/light clean in between visits.

Back when we had a cleaning lady she charged $50 a time and she cleaned countertops/stovetops/floors/sinks/tubs/toilets and took out the trash. She also ran the vacuum. She never picked anything up or cleaned windows or dusted. It took her 2 hours. Honestly it wasn't worth it in my opinion.

I had another cleaning lady when I lived in Florida. She charge $12 an hour and was phenomenal. She would pick up and do laundry. She even put it away! She played with my dog and cat and ran errands. When she left for the day my house was in better shape than I could get it. She spoke no english but that is ok. I figure exposure to Spanish was good for my pets lol.  I would hire her again in a second.

Just be choosy in who you hire. I would have paid the second lady more. It wasn't about money. I loved her willingness to do whatever her hand found that needed doing. That blessed me! When someone comes in with a list of all the things they won't do or will empty the trash but refuse to pick up the wrapper that fell behind the can I say why bother.

I have almost 1600 sq ft, 3/2.5 and my person charges $97 each time.  I only get them once a month just to help me out.  I use a service that has teams and I've been very disappointed with the last 2 times so I'm willing to give them one more chance... then I'm done.  Finding good help is so hard sometimes.

So the price sounds reasonable compared to what everyone else seems to be paying. I just hesitate on spending $320 a month on something I can do myself. I know this team is amazing. They do a couple of my family members and they do everything, besides laundry which I wouldn't expect them to do anyways. She does a full cleaning including windows, baseboards, anc couches. As well as the regular dusting, floors, stove, etc.

My husband hired a maid to come and clean since I'm pregnant and the housework was getting to be too much for me to keep up with.

Our house is about 1800 sf and we pay $75 every 2 weeks.  She cleans everything!

    • Dusts the fans, blinds, baseboards, tables, etc.
    • Cleans the kitchen (including the oven)
    • Cleans the bathrooms (including the rugs)
    • Sweeps, mops, vacuums
    • Washes the sheets in the master bedroom and makes the bed
    • Goes through the fridge and pantry and throws out any expired food
    • Empties the trash
    • Washes all of the rags that she uses and puts them away for her next visit

I might be forgetting a few things, but the house is sparkling when we get home :-)

We have someone that comes every other week and charges $65. I live in an apartment, which is ~1300 square feet (2bed, 1 bath). She does an amazing job scrubbing down all our floors (wood), making the bathroom shine, and dusting/cleaning all other surfaces. I was against hiring someone at first, but my husband really pushed for it. Since I previously did 90% of the cleaning I do feel like a big weight has been lifted off me.

@Mrs.T To Bee: Amazingly they got so they obeyed all kinds of Spanish commands. She would croon to them in Spanish all the time. My dog was a retired service animal and she had him helping carrying buckets, closing cabinets etc. He had a serious case of hero worship going on LOL.

I also use a company (a bit more expensive than an individual) and pay $85 every two weeks.  (If we had weekly service the cost would be $70/week.) I think they probably spend about 3.5-4 hours each time, and my house is 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, three floors.  My husband and I keep our house really neat, so get A LOT of extras from our service - completely clean out the refrigerator, change all the beds and towels, clean the oven, etc. - which is wonderful!

A lot of the rate will depend on where you live, but $25/hour seems like a pretty reasonable baseline (based on what other people I know pay) for an individual.

We have a maid that comes every other week and we pay her $90 for our 2000 square foot townhouse.  I think the $90 we pay is really reasonable, so I think your rate seems pretty fair.

Both my sisters clean houses part time and charge $30.00/hr.

They won't clean any house that has children or pets.

@SandyDollHair- That is very interesting. I couldn't imagine needing a cleaning person if there were no children or pets. But it must make your sisters lives a lot easier.

    @secondchances: That is stinkin' adorable.

I have no need for a cleaning lady right now (other than pure laziness haha) but once kids come along I think I would definitely have to consider it.  I think I would maybe look around for student cleaners just because I'm cheap ;)

Hiring a cleaning lady is not an option for DH and I bc in NYC it is very expensive. My building offers cleaning services, but they start at $70, so my 1 bedroom apartment would probably be around $85/90 per clean.

I do understand the dog hair being a problem though, because we fostered two huge long haired cats that shed like crazy. I had to vacuum every day if I wanted my surfaces to be free of hair.

Have you tried air purifiers? That might help. Also, I know you prob realize this already, but if you do a little each day it doesn't get so bad. Then if you hire the cleaning lady only once a month for a deep clean you could probably save a lot!

@roxy821:Exactly! They got so much business from single and elderly people that they "weeded out" the really difficult houses and now they are more choosy.

It's not that they don't love pets and kids...they just don't see the point in doing those houses if they don't have to.

We have a lady come in every 2 weeks for a 3 hour clean. She charges us $45 and will do whatever needs doing. Focus is on dusting, floors and bathrooms. She'll wash any dishes we leave behind, take out the trash and scub the showers/tubs etc. It's a godsend, she makes life so much easier for us. We both work full time and commute a good 1-1.5 hours daily, and have 2 dogs that shed constantly!

If you want to save some $, ask her price for every other week.  It is usually a little more, but not a lot and most cleaning can be ok for 2 weeks.  Maybe $2200 instead of $3200 for year will make it easier to say yes.

I'd love to get a cleaner, but we can't just yet with our job situation.  My friend paid $65 bi weekly for a small apartment.

@moderndaisy- I should add that my husband is self employed and on top of having my full time job I handle all of his office work. So I am just running into the issue of not having time. I currently do clean a little every night and a big clean on the weekends but with the business I am running out of time.

@prettylizy- $45 is awesome. I thought about every other week but since she would need to do more of a deep cleaning it would be $130 every two weeks instead of $80 every week.

We have a 2300 square foot home & pay our cleaning lady $60 every two weeks.

@roxy821: I'm sure the price is as cheap as it is because of where we live. For the same service in the city where my sister lives, it would be more than double. Yay small towns!

I want a cleaning lady so bad - to me it would be totally worth $80/week to never have to clean, or argue with my husband about cleaning. We can't afford it right now but when I get a bump in salary that's the first thing I'm doing.

OP: I had the same feelings as you when my DH and I spoke about hiring a cleaning lady. We both work full time, but we're not THAT busy. We definitely have time on the weekends that we could be cleaning, but the thing was, we didn't WANT to be cleaning. Your time has value, and if $80/week buys you a few extra hours doing something you love on the weekends (even if it's sitting on the couch watching TV), it's worth it.

We pay $50 every 2 weeks for our cleaning lady. We have a 4 bed, 4 bath, 2000 sq ft house, but since it's just my husband and I, we really only use a few rooms, so she cleans those (master bed, master bath, kitchen, family room, 1/2 bath) everytime and cleans the other rooms (spare bedrooms, spare bathrooms, living room, dining room, basement) every few cleanings.

She has made our weekends so much more enjoyable. It's really added to our quality of life.

I used to think it was silly to have a cleaning lady b/c like others said, why pay when you can do it yourself. But wow I love my cleaning lady! My grandma gifted her to me when I had my baby and I don't know how I'd live without her now!

I have a 3 bedroom, 2 bath. My first cleaning lady charged $60. I just switched (we had issues with her) and now we're using my mom's cleaning lady who she's had since my older sister was born, so she's charging $50 since we're so close to them.

Don't want to threadjack but I have a question.

For you ladies that have cleaning ladies, are you home when they come or are you at work? Ive thought about getting one but I'm not sure how comfortable I am having someone in the house when we arent home. On the other hand, I cant imagine being in the house while someone else is cleaning.

@Bostongril25- I will not be home. The cleaning lady I just hired works for my mother, my cousin, and her mother so I have a little bit of a track record to trust her. But if someone if cleaning you don't want to be in the way either. I just think of how annoyed I am when someone tries to walk on the floors when I am washing them.

@Bostongrl25:She comes while we are at work. Our cleaning lady even has a key to our house because I was nervous that I would forget to leave one and she would come all the way over and be locked out.

She also cleans for 2 of my cousins, my brother, my brother's ILs, and my neighbor. I figure if she does something to piss one of us off, she will be loosing out on a TON of business, so I trust her.

So anyone home while their cleaning person is there? Seems like most people do it while they are at work. My DH and I are thinking of hiring someone, as he refuses to help out, and I am sick of doing 99% of the work.

Our issue is that we have two dogs, so someone coming by when we aren't home isn't the best. One dog is contained in the middle of the house by baby gates and the other is in a crate. I'd rather be home when they are cleaning, as the 'contained' dog will attack the vacuum, and other things that make loud noises...

@snoie- Do you have a basement or a guest room that maybe you don't need to have cleaned? My dogs will go in the basement and I am going to put a babygate at the bottom of the stairs.
