My experience when unclogging ducts: pump, pump, pump, and more pump. While you are pumping, massage that area really well and it will help loosen it. Once it does loosen and unclog, you might get a small slug of mucousy type milk that will plug up the nipple on a bottle when that milk is used.
Hmmm...I do pump daily, and massage that area, and that hasn't helped. I started pumping when she was 2 weeks old, so that hasn't helped.
I really hope it's just a clogged duct, and nothing else.
Is a clogged duct usually painful?
I don't have any personal experience with this, but good luck! It's probably a clogged duct, since those are super common, but I'm glad your doctor is being pro-active. Not to terrify you, but there was a woman on my street who similarly noticed a lump in her breast when her baby was breastfeeding. Her doctor told her not to worry b/c it was just a clogged duct, but then she found out much later on that it was actually breast cancer. If her doctor had only run some tests initially, then her treatment course would have been much less severe. Like I said, yours is almost definitely a clogged duct, but it's always best to check things out just in case.
heat, massage and pumping. i take hot showers and have one if those heating pads you put in the microwave that i'd lay on my chest and massage the area lightly. Mine would feel tender though. I'd also try to keep the breat fairly empty.
@L2sweetpea: I didn't even know I had a clogged duct when I had one, so for me, no pain associated with it. I found out I'd had one when one of the bottle nipples repeatedly wouldn't unclog and found out after the fact that is what the issue was, the mucousy type milk from that clogged duct.
I don't think I really had clogged ducts but I could feel them when I was ready to get the feeding show on the road. If it did start to feel a little uncomfortable, I'd do what the others said--massage and pump/feed. I also have fibrocystic breast tissue so I've been in for an ultrasound and mammo a few times. Those turned out to be nothing concerning. I did have an area of microcalcifications (something you'd never feel) and needed a biopsy for that. They numb you and you don't really see what's going on. I was a little sore afterwards and had to wear a sports bra 24/7 for a day or 2. Some people get freaked out about them so the office I went to would give those women a little something to take the edge off. But I was fine. Good luck! And, yes, better to be proactive!

I just had my 6 week follow up today...and a few weeks ago I noticed a hard spot on my breast so I asked my practitioner about it today. She said it is most likely a clogged duct, but is sending me for an ultrasound of my breast and possibly biopsy just to be on the safe side.
It doesn't cause me any pain, and the only reason I really noticed it is because I am breastfeeding.
Has anyone had a clogged duct before? What does it feel like? How do you un-clog it/if possible?
Ever had a breast biopsy? What is that like?
