DH & I removed our horrible closet doors when we put down hardwood floors. Since then we haven't put any up (I actually like the openness of it) however it just looks messy. We have 1 long bar and 1 shelf above that. It's a long closet (10'-12') and a few feet deep. I'm toying with the idea of not putting up doors again because the doors would have to be custom ordered bi-fold doors and would cost over $80 each and we would need 4 of them. So I saw this on the Target website and thought that it looks so nice and organized without having doors. DH can do the moulding and we could paint the inside the same color as our bedroom but is this OK? I mean is it normal not to have closet doors? Anyone else have no doors and an organizing system. This price seems reasonable and has good reviews. If you have an organizer can you post a picture to it? I'm just in need of some closet assistance, it's looked like it is now for over a year now.

Here is the system I liked http://www.target.com/Louis-Standard-Shelving-System-Closets/dp/B000BP7Y8U/ref=br_1_13?ie=UTF8&id=Louis%20Standard%20Shelving%20System%20Closets&node=343381011&searchSize=30&searchView=grid5&searchPage=1&sr=1-13&qid=1310398831&rh=&searchBinNameList=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Ctarget_com_primary_color-bin%2Ctarget_com_size-bin%2Ctarget_com_brand-bin&searchRank=salesrank&frombrowse=1

I don't have one but I think that would look fine! You don't even necessarily paint the closet the same color as the room either...maybe whatever the trim is in the room?

We never painted the closet when we moved in so it is a hideous color of blue, so painting is a must (we don't have a trim color it's just all the same color)! Laughing

I think it looks good! do ittttt. I know you want to :) <<sorry just had to say it.

Organising systems are really hard to find what works. Ours is a walk in robe but it wont have a door. So im actually trying to come up with something similar to block it off if i find it annoying.

I say itll be fine, depending how neat you are. It might start to drive you nuts if your piles are tilting and spilling over, hanging clothes stuffed in because you have to many.

Some things to do that will help give it that cohesive, neat look

Buy all the same hangers in wood.

    Buy baskets, shelf dividers

We have an organizer system like that. I love it because it maximizes the space available and organizes the clothes.

The reality is that most of us don't maintain our closets like they do in ads or magazines. We put up a sliding door on barn type hardware. I love it because you can push it completely out of the ways so the whole closet is viewable at the same time.

I used the Elfa system from the Container Store and I can't say enough good things about them.  You take your measurements in to the store and design your closet to your specific needs with the help of one of the employees.  Everything was super easy to install and you can change it up if you need to.  They usually run a sale every February, if you can wait a bit.  I did two closets that ran me under $600 in total.  I have doors on my closet but I rarely close them.  To be honest, after I first put them in, I used to come home and look at my closets and marvel at how good they look.  I know, I"m strange.  :)

I love the look of open closets, and think it would serve as a great motivation to keep your closet clean!

Um my middle name is Organize. (Seriously... ok not really but still). I like the open closet doors if it's kept clean. I also like the look of the organizer from Target, it's different than most. It looks like furniture and would be great I'm sure!

I think it looks nice.  And really, how many people will actually see your closet anyway?  If you wanted to cover it, and didn't want to have to worry about buying another door or whatever, you could always hang a curtain in front of the closet.

I think we are going to go for it! I am an organizing freak so I know it will be kept neat. I really hate doors and it seems like a waste buying them custom made when we know we aren't going to live here forever. I'll post pics up in a few weeks when it's done!
