In regard to doing a cold rinse first before washing, I just do a delicate cycle on cold as my rinse and then do a hot power wash. It will mean you'll be in your laundry room a lot but it isn't the end of the world. With that said, you could possibly dump your wetbag into your tub and self agitate as your cold rinse and then drag it all down to your laundry room but that could be very heavy.
I'm not sure if you saw the Flats Challenge that went around the CDing community but it was to prove that even people with very little money and no washer/dryer could CD successfully. Granted, it focused on handwashing everything but it may give you some insight that is useful. Check out Dirty Diaper Laundry's website and her review of the Flat's Challenge and feedback people provided.
I used cloth diapers but I had a diaper service that dropped them off and picked upp the dirties for $13 dollars a month. I am not brave enough to do it any other way.
@secondchances:I like that. How did you find that company? I wouldnt even know how to google that.
But with the diaper service do you own the diapers or are you using the ones provided by the company? Because I want to buy my own diapers.
I do a diaper wash every other day, and it's hard enough when the washing machine is just a couple of steps away when you have a baby! I'm sure it's doable, but I don't think i'd like to do it.
My mom had a diaper service, she didn't buy her own diapers they provided and washed them for her.
I dont think the diaper service is for me, because I know for sure I want to have my own all in one diapers..
OMG! What company is this!? I will definitely have to hit 'em up when/if I have kids. It's such a LOAD off (LITERALLY!) to have someone do that for you. Those types of things are time consuming.
I am also planning on cloth diapering, and don't have ensuite laundry - I will be using the laundry room in our building. I have the same issues with not being able to do a cold rinse. I think / hope it's possible - I'm pretty sure John and Sherry from Young House Love do just a hot load without a rinse for their BumGenius Elementals, and that seems to work for them... We're due in November so I'll definitely let you know how it works out!
@Mrs Moose: yes please do come back and let us know how it works out for you, I also plan to get the bum genius freetime all in ones [the new ones coming out in december] So i'm hoping I can get away with just doing a regular cycle after using a diaper sprayer
EDIT: I just checked out the Young House Love blog and you were right they dont do the cold rinse first on their bum genius diapers either
@bells - the Freetimes look great! I am actually going to order my BumGenius diapers today or tomorrow, and I've been debating about whether to go with the Elementals or wait for the Freetime... it looks like you can't put the Freetime in the dryer though, which you can with the Elemental. Any idea why this is??
@bells: I honestly think with a new born and BF (if you are planning on it) this would be very overwhelming and I have two children. Maybe using the service for the first couple weeks or disposables might be helpful until you are recovered and in the swing of things. Just curious, why do you prefer to buy your own?
I lived in orlando at the time and they contacted me. They were an offshoot of the company that did laundry for hotels/ restaurants.
@mrskesslertobe: Because its more cost effective to actually own the diaper vs renting it on a weekly basis. I'm not going to use cloth diapers immediately on my new born. I plan to use disposables until the umblical cord comes off and then once the baby is a few weeks old transition to the all-in-ones by Bum Genius.
@Mrs Moose: Yeah I dont know why you cant put them in the dryer.. I'll just wait until they are on the market and then see what the reviews are like but so far thats my favorite one.
If I were going to be home with the baby and had our own washer (or even one in the building) I think I'd cloth diaper. But since it's a negative on both counts, I'm not. At least not for right now.
@bells: Thanks for the response. I always wondered why people would prefer to have their own vs. have someone wash them for you. Make sense:)
@mrskesslertobe: yeah if you plan to have more than one baby then buying your own will save you so much more down the line because you can reuse them for baby number 2 and maybe even 3 if they survive that long!
@bells: Actually most diaper services just pick up your diapers, wash them for you, and return them. You can rent diapers, but you don't have to. The store in my area has a cloth diaper service, $10/week, they pick up YOUR diapers (you own them), they wash them and return them.
check it out: www.allthingsdiapers.com
I'm sure if you look around online you could find something. Or look for a cloth diaper store in your area and ask them if they know of a diaper service, I think they're more common than you think! I was so surprised to find that in my rural midwest state we even had that option!!
The diaper services that are in my area don't offer that option of washing my own diapers for me. they are all a weekly rent system and the cheapest I've seen so far is $40 per week. Plus if they were picking up my own diapers on a weekly basis I would need a lot more diapers to last me the entire week until they were washed. I'll just tough it out with the laundry room in our apartment complex
Ok... non Mom here putting in my 2 cents... I would be completely grossed out and pretty peeved if someone was washing diapers in the communal laundry room in my apartment complex. I think if you don't have your own washer/dryer, and you want to go the cloth route, the responsible choice is a service.
@MissNoodles: If that grosses you out then you should never use a communal landry room because there are a lot worse stuff going into the washer than diapers.
@bells: Exactly what I was thinking...I'd take baby poop over an adult's bodily functions.
@MsMamaBear: Haha I know right! plus its like theres gonna be poop floating around in the washer. It all going to be pre rinsed iwth my diaper sprayer before it goes in the wash. I may even end up using disposable liners, if necessary.
We do cloth and don't have a washing machine or dryer! It's not a problem, actually. For the prefolds we use a diaper service. For the covers we use Little Beetle wool covers, which require hand-washing anyway. We wash them in our bathroom sink with wool-safe soap and then dry them on a little drying rach we bought at Ikea. We are very satisfied with this setup after 8 months of doing things this way.
good to hear people get by without a washer. I searched online and found a lot more people who use cloth diapers but dont have their own washer. Its definitely doable

Is it possible to CD without your own washer and dryer? we are currently in an apartment so we dont have our own washer, now I see from most CD sites that you have to do a cold rinse before washing it. the washers we use are in the apartment landry room and I dont think they give you the option to do just a rinse cycle. Has anyone successfully done cloth diapering without their own washer? any advice would be great.
