So we're planning on getting both newborn dipes and one-size. We'll use newborn from birth until they grow out of them to avoid the gigantic fluffy butt babies wearing a onesize diaper that's bigger than them.

Since we plan on having several kids, we feel like we'll get our money's worth out of them, so it's worth.

The question is, how many newborn, and onesize diapers, do we actually need? I've heard everything from 10-60, so I really have no idea at this point. Someone who's already cloth diapering- care to help? :)

Note: I'm referring to AIO and pocket dipes, not prefolds and covers.

There was some discussion of this on the stickied cloth diapering thread but my opinion on it is this:  newborn size AIOs, pockets, or fitteds - 20, one size AIOs or pockets - 36.  For the newborn size 20 gives you the ability to have enough for even the worst day so you may end up doing a load of diapers every day to day and a half but you don't want too many because they don't stay in that size for long.  For the one size diapers, you'll still be doing a load of diapers every 2 to 3 days but not out of necessity but for hygeine purposes.  The one size will be used a lot longer than newborn size and you don't want to wash the same 15-20 diapers quite so often as it can wear on the PUL and elastic.  Adding more to your stash will give you the ability to not have them wash them quite so often and allow them to last through one or more baby's use.

20-24 is good from month 2. YOu'll want to wash every 3 days max anyway. I have 3 AIO and the rest are pocket snaps. We used disposables for the first month so I would think, brand new-newborns need a more...maybe 30 to be safe but you could go less if you don't mind washing every 2 days. Oh and go with the snaps if you want them to last and you have a smaller rotation.

Beware with the newborn sizes. I bought 10 newborn diapers but when I put them on DD I found her legs were too small for the openings. The one-size diapers actually fit her correctly.

To answer your question, I started with 25 one size and 10 newborn.

This is from the Gro-Via facebook page under their "6 Mistakes" Post. I completely agree with her and I think more is better:

I cannot stress enough how important stash size is. Whether using sized or one size diapers you MUST have enough diapers to not only last between washings, but also rotate your stash. With a one size diapering system we recommend enough diapers for 38-50 CHANGES. Even an AI2 system like GroVia requires 14 Shells, 38 Soaker pads for full time diapering. Any less than this means excessive wear and tear on your diapers that are being used on a daily basis. There is not a single other piece of clothing that gets used and washed as much as a cloth diaper, yet we expect them to last through many months or even years of use. Remember, the less often you have to wash your diapers and covers, the longer they will last. If you choose to diaper with a smaller stash plan on replacing your diapers every 6-9 months. Don't expect one-size diapers (or sized diapers!) to last 2 years if you only have 10-15 in rotation!

This is also from that post:

In the past 3-4 years we’ve seen a boom of one size diapers come onto the market. One size diapers have many advantages as they fit a broad size range and can often eliminate the need to buy multiple sizes of diapers. With this have come many unrealistic expectations. One size diapers are often made of the same materials as their sized counterparts. One size diapers are not able to withstand any more wear and laundering than sized diapers. If you diaper full time with a one size system and want them to last until potty learning, buy enough diapers (38-45 minimum). Babies come in different shapes and sizes and not every diaper, one size or not, is guaranteed to fit. Try one or two diapers before investing in an entire stash!

We have 30 AIO, OS. I think it's a perfect number for us. We do a wash every other day, and we have enough that we don't have to worry about running out if drying takes a while or she poos more than normal one day.

We bought the whole stash without knowing if we liked them or if they would fit, which was pretty scary b/c it's such a big investment. Thank goodness we love them!

We are only three weeks in, but it's taken us a while to get our diapers up to the right number, because my son didn't fit into the newborn size covers that we bought. I had 24 prefolds and four covers for the newborn period, planning to switch to one-size pocket diapers when he got bigger. But my son was 9 lbs with big legs, so we started using our 9 one size diapers right away. 9 was not enough to last a whole day and we used disposables until we could order more pocket diapers. Depending on how big you think your baby might be, you might now want to invest a lot in newborn sizes.

We used one size from the start since Baby T was 10lbs 9oz. Currently I have enough for 40 diaper changes. Our stash has 10 pocket diapers, 6 Flip organic inserts, and 24 Flip stay dry inserts. (Plus 9 Flip covers). I wash every 2-3 days. I had about 18 Flip stay dry inserts (which are what we send to daycare each day) but had to buy more so I didn't run out for the 3rd day. I sent 7-8, and he goes through 5-6 each day.
