Clueless on invitations. HELP!!

You can really do just about anything you want to do!  

Are your guests selecting a meal, or is it a buffet/cocktail style/etc?

How formal is your wedding?  If it’s black tie, it’s probably best to do inner and outer envelopes.  

Are your guests internet-savvy?  You could include one small insert card directing them to your wedding website where they can find additional information about lodging, directions, and local attractions.

It really does depend on what you want, and what kind of wedding you’re having.

@thumpurr:  Don’t stress 🙂  It’s all going to be ok.

Ok, so the first thing you need is to decide what information is going to be on the invitation, and what wording you plan to use.

Are your parents or your partner’s parents paying?  Are you and your partner paying?

You’ll need to include the date, time, and location of your ceremony.

The RSVP card should have your typical “accepts” or “regrets” as well as meal choices. 

The information insert should include either a link to your wedding website (I think has a good template, and it’s free!) OR lodging information and/or directions.  You can do two separate cards if you like, one with accommodations and another with a map and directions.  Totally up to you.

We did inner and outer envelopes.  The outer one is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. John Smith, and the inner envelope is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Eve and John Smith and the next line says Anne, Evelyn, and Dylan to indicate that their children are invited as well (if they’re not included, do not name them, easy peasy)

Or, you can do single outer envelopes addressed to the person(s) invited and include a line on the RSVP card that says “_____ of __2__ attending” to indicate that they are being given 2 seats.

The inner envelope is also helpful when inviting a single person plus a guest.  Outer envelope is addressed to Mr. John Smith and the inner says Mr. John Smith and Guest.


A quick note as well, to make your life easier in the long run, is to write on the back side of the RSVP card a number in pencil or invisible ink and keep a master list of which number you sent to which guest, so when people forget to fill in their name but tell you they want the chicken, you can check your list to see that #3 is Aunt Mary.

Our information card directed guests to our wedding website, where we have travel information, hotel accommodations, local attractions, weather information, etc.
