Yeah good call ismini. The CT girls are not representing.
Date: August 21, 2010
Branford House, Groton, CT
Caterer booked, dress found and ordered
Narrowing down photographer selection; FI working on band selection
BM dresses decided, colors figured out for the most part
Still feeling behind....
OMG ISMINI! I am getting married in Middletown on 10/9/2010 as well!!! Crazy.
Did you steal the Wesleyan Chapel? J/K ;)
So the details:
When: 10/09/2010
Ceremony: First Cong. Church Middletown
Reception: The Barns at Wesleyan Hills
What we have so far:
Dress, Website, Photographer, Videographer, Catering (comes with Barns), and Officiant...thinking of ordering STD's, invites this week
I've officially asked 5/7 of my bridesmaids...kind of have colors, styles picked.
Otherwise, lots of googling for decoration inspiration and rehearsal ideas.
@ismini, and other Connecticut bees: do you know much about Middletown? We picked it b/c it's the midpoint between NYC and Boston, but fiance and I have only been there once and we didn't hit downtown. I've heard it's a great place with lots to do.....
oh geez...i feel behing the ball, allisonc! :) time for me to get a bit more in gear!
We stayed overnight in Middletown- it's very cute, but not a whole lot going on, actually (less than we thought there would be). There are lots of restaurants though. The site i found very helpful was the wesleyan website- lots of info on lodging, restaurants, etc....
www.wesleyan.edu/about/restaurants.html
And Kittyachi- i can't believe you feel behind! i haven't even found my dress! :)
I think I'll feel better once the photographer and music situations are locked down. As for the dress, I didn't think I would end up finding a dress right away since I'm really picky but it happened. That was dumb luck pretty much.
Don't feel behind! We know our photographer and videographer so we didn't have to search for them! And catering comes with the reception venue, so we didn't have to look for caterers either :) Anything we know about Middletown has come from Wesleyan's website too! I guess I'll just have to go there before the wedding. We haven't even see the church in person, so a weekend in Middletown might have to happen.
Not sure if I count as a CT bride but our venue is in Stamford.
Date: 9.5.10
Ceremony: Westchester (NY)
Reception: Stamford Hilton
Narrowed my dress down to 2 styles. BM dresses we'll start looking after the holidays.
We have most of our vendors already picked out - still looking for a photog. (P.S. - I found some GREAT ones in the lower CT/Westch. area if anyone's interested but our top 3 were already booked for our date).
Does anyone know of any great parks, museums, etc that would be close to downtown Stamford where we could take pics? We have time between the church and cocktail hour. The hotel is in the business district so it doesn't really have grounds where we could take pictures & the waterfront is pretty industral.
We're getting married at the Stamford Hilton too on April 24, 2010.
So far we have the major stuff done but have some little things to figure out. One major thing I need to find is musicians for the ceremony (also at the Hilton in their tent). Originally we were just going to use our DJ since he has to be there anyway for the sound system, but now I'm thinking a string quartet or trio might be a really nice touch. Anyone have any suggestions?
@Dancy905-- We are running into the same issue for good places to take pictures. One of the places I found that might be interesting is actually taking a shot a the train station. I saw someone who got married at the Hilton do pictures there and the juxtiposition of the beautiful white gown against the speeding train was very cool. The Bartlett Arboritium might be another good option for you. If you think of other places will you let me know? TIA!
@mrs.peacock - you got it! The good thing about having an unemployed fiance?? He's supposed to go this week to check out the area. We don't know outside the downtown area very well so I'm not sure about what's around. There's got to be a botanical gardens/horticultural society, or pretty college campus around somewhere.
I also thought of a museum or something as backup in case it rains. I don't wanna be stuck taking family pics in a conference room!
The Norwalk Aquarium is a bit of a hike, but might make for nice pictures. Also, parts of downtown Stamford are really pretty. I was thinking of maybe something at the Palace Theater. We're also having our rehearsal dinner at the Saltwater Grille so I was wondering if they would let me come back for some waterfront shots. It's only 5-10 minutes from the Hitlon.
For anyone getting married in Stamford or the surrounding area, here is a list of all the Stamford Restaurants. We were going to print it out and put it in the OOT bags with specific diretions to some.
http://www.stamford-downtown.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=38&Itemid=59#
Also for Fairfield County activities, museums, etc.
For the Stamford ladies...there are some beaches very close by to the downtown area...my fiance used to live in Stamford, and it would be maybe a 10 minute drive away. there is also a waterfront park in that vicinity as well....with some trees, beach and some lovely rocks. could be a beautiful setting for photos. :)

an aereal of cove island park:
so another question:
how is everyone finding their vendors? are you using theknot.com, or myconnecticutwedding.com, connecticut-weddings.com or another wonderful website?
which one do you find is the most helpful?
i must admit i have just been googling and looking things up fairly randomly...then checking reviews on weddingwire.com.
All of our vendors have come on recommendation from our venue or from friends/fam that have already used them. I'm super picky about our vendors too because I'm so paranoid about getting screwed. I have tons of lists from florists & photogs to chocolate fountains and linens - is there anything in particular you're looking for?
P.S. - beware the vendor ratings on knot & wedchan. They pay to advertise on there so I'm always a little weary of what "reviews" are on there & who wrote them.
Dancy,
I am guessing your lists focus more on the Stamford area, right?
Do you happen to have any DJ, florist and hair/makeup vendors you would suggest or that you have heard good things about that are a bit more into the state? i think Stamford vendors would be a bit far for our big day...
Thanks in advance!
Ismini
FI was in charge of the DJ. We've got it narrowed down to - a guy who did a friend's wedding or -
We're leaning towards a company called The Pros. They do photo, video & DJ. You can pick just 1 service or all 3 & you get a discount for each service you use and then it's just 1 bill to pay. We went to one of their showcases (I know those things are horrible) but we found a husband/wife team of photogs & fell in love with their work. (http://www.thepros.com/)
One of my BM's sister is my makeup artist. I can ask her if she knows someone really good in your area.
We're using Odyssey Floral Design in New Rochelle, NY (914.633.4228). The store is on Main St. in New Rochelle & it's not the greatest area but the guy who owns it is awesome. I dunno how far he'll travel but it's worth a try to call. We asked for orchid centerpieces and his mock-up was better than I envisioned. PLUS - his price was $30 cheaper per table than Stew Leonard's!!!
For photo we also looked at:
Troy Photography: Husband and wife team who take uh-mazing pictures! They're in Ellington.
www.troyphotography.com

Studio 1923: Jerome is awesome & took pics for college friends wedding. He's in Middletown. He was booked for our date.

I'm DIY crafting like crazy, we're making our own oragami centerpieces, chuppah, placecards, favors, menus and what feels like a bazillion other items. I'm still trying to figure out the veil and jewelry and poor mom cannot find a decent formal reasonably priced MOB dress so were on the hunt for those items. I live in the New Haven area and knew nothing about Norwalk when getting started and found the KNOT to be the MOST UNhelpful and stressful website. If you need recs in my local area or or Norwalk, I'm happy to try and help.
I am trying to find musicians for our ceremony in Stamford-- has anyone found any good strink trios or quartets?
@KAlise, can't help with alterations, but if you are looking for someone to help with the Cake, we are using DiMare's Bakery. Really good stuff!
Mrspeacock - thanks so much. That's a huge help, I'll start my seach after the new year.

Great post Ismini! I was pretty surprised to see how dead the CT board was!

I'm a huge 'style me pretty' and '100 layer cake' blog follower and doing a lot of DIY details also which is fun especially when I can get the fiance to help out! So far we're working on making dinner napkins and programs ourselves which are coming along.
@RAllise I live in South Norwalk about 1 block from the aquarium! Such a great spot :) Let me know if you need any suggestions for Norwalk related things that you haven't found out yet!
@ sophie10 that's cool! Do you know when it'll be on? One of my friends from work was on it the show too she said it was a good experience.
Thanks @Dancy905 ! It was so much fun.. definitely a great experience. I never thought I'd actually choose the dress while being taped for the show but I did! They haven't let me know when it will air yet but I'm excited for it... just hoping it's not before my wedding so my fiance won't see it!
@ sophie10-Welcome and thanks so much for the offer. My fiance & I are looking for cakes in that area. I'll follow MrsPeacock's suggestion & try Dimares. We also have an appt with Chocopology that I'm soooooooooooooooooo excited about.
Would you know a decent BYOB restaurant for a rehearsal dinner in that area? My fiance's family is from the UK (HUGE drinkers) & we feel it's the best way to have a super nice, yet, affordable rehearsal dinner but I'm not that familiar with Fairfield county.
I also got my dress at Kleinfelds. They were taping the bride next to me and everytime I tried on my gown, Randy came out to chat. It was a GREAT experience. Congrats to you, can't wait to see your episode. My dress hasn't come in yet. When it does, I'll need to decide who to use for alterations. Unsure it will warrant the Kleinfeld fee, I'll see when I go back to try it on.
Has anyone had their wedding, or been to one, at the Barns at Wesleyan Hills? We are looking at it as a possible venue and I was wondering what people's experiences were like there (food, staff, unexpected costs, etc?)? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated
Hi @otherstuff - we're getting married at the Barns in three weeks! So far it has been a great experience and the staff has been extremely helpful - I was on the phone for about half an hour with one of the staff members hashing out details and she was very patient and answered all of my questions.
The only sort of "unexpected" cost is that the per head cost goes up a LOT when taxes are figured out, which my fiance did not like (I guess I expected it?!) but with me coming from the Boston area and him having just moved here from NYC, we still think the cost per head at the Barns is reasonable, though I've seen other people on the 'bee call it expensive. Guess it's all relative. We're also choosing to have the Barns decorated by whatever vendor they use to string up twinkly lights in the rafters. We could've done this ourselves, but the thought of me or my family on a ladder before the wedding was keeping me up a night, so we decided to go with the decorating service which in my opinion, is wwaaaay overpriced. My parents are paying for it as sort of a "gift" though, which helps :)
We're excited about the food options and so are our guests! I'd love to tell you more when we get back from our honeymoon in about a month (yikes) but from our experiences so far, I give the Barns two thumbs up!
I have seen pictures of weddings from there and they're STUNNING!!!! I have heard really great things, happy planning and congrats!
The staff is great, but it's sort of like a wedding factory. The food is very basic and the suggested decorator is way over priced.
If you are having your wedding outside I would caution you about the bugs, if it's buggy season. There's tons of standing water and all of the outdoor events I've been to you could tell that all the guests were distracted by all the bug swatting. Another bride had bug spray out, but I thought it was kind of strange to think everyone would be smelling like off the entire night. Good luck with your hunt!
Thanks for your comments everyone!!
@allisonc - I would love to hear about your wedding day experience when you return
How are all the CT brides doing????? any updates or recommendations on vendors? pics from real weddings? advice or opinions! :)
OK, this is long and pic-heavy. Feel free to skip, skim, or PM me with any questions!
I can't recommend the Barns at Wesleyan Hills ENOUGH!! Someone mentioned it was wedding factory-ish and the food wasn't great, etc, but I couldn't disagree more, and we got married during a weekend when there were three events planned at the barns. My event coordinator made me feel like I was the only bride she had to look after all weekend - we never felt rushed, and we received tons of personal attention. I've been to weddings where the staff kicks the guests out in order to set up for the next wedding - that's "wedding factory" to me, and that's pretty much the opposite of what I experienced at The Barns!
The guests LOVED the decor and the food - well, and I loved the food too, I sat down and ate it while my groom wandered, lol. The staff at the Barns took my pile of "stuff" (card box, framed bird pics that matched the theme, centerpieces, guest "book" picture, etc etc) and made it look pulled together, thoughtful and beautiful - all I had to do was bring everything down to Connecticut and sit for about 30 minutes going over how I wanted things to look. She also had the room rearranged how I wanted it. At the end of the night, the staff made sure that my parents and bridal party had everything they needed as well, i.e. the ceremony shoes I had taken off and ditched in the back room and left without, card box with TONS of cards in it, all the pictures, decorations. They were fantastic. Highly recommended.
I think someone may have mentioned price too. Being from the Boston area and husband being from New York city, we know how much it costs to have a wedding in either of those cities, so The Barns was perfect in terms of our price range. We also went all out with the sit-own dinner, premium open bar, added a cake to our wedding package, added decorating, etc. There are ways to bring down the per person cost if it is more than you want to spend. For some, it may not be a reasonable option, but to us, the per person cost was worth it!
As for decorating - to me, it was worth the money because the Barns looked how I wanted it and I didn't have to do any work. It did cost us $1600 and when I first worked it into our wedding package, I was kind of horrified we were willing to spend that much on what seemed like basic decorating, however, when it came to the wedding weekend, I was dealing with about a million different things, and knowing that the Barns would be lit up beautifully and not having to worry about it was AMAZING. Plus I was at The Barns while the guys were stringing up the lights and it seemed time-consuming and pretty unfun, not something I'd want to burden our guests or family with the morning of the wedding (never mind worrying about my dad/uncle/groomsman on a tall ladder!) Here's how it looked:

From the balcony:

We were lucky on our wedding day because the weather was fantastic. The grounds of the barns are beautiful. The lawn was a bit damp, but other than sinking into the grass a bit, we didn't encounter any problems, no bugs, nothing like that. The pro pics will have a much nicer angle and better lighting, but here's an idea of the outdoor space:

Also recommended: The Inn at Middletown - we had a rehearsal reception here as well as our room block. Not only was the staff amazing to us and our guests (e.g. recommending restaurants, making a copy of the bridal suite key when DH and I arrived after the wedding locked out of the room) but the property was also perfect for taking pics:

Other recommendations:
First Church of Christ, Congregational: I'm from Massachusetts and wanted my pastor to marry us. We chatted with the pastor at First Church, put my pastor in touch with him as well, and worked it all out. They were really lovely about everything.
Esca Restaurant and Wine Bar: one of the top ten best martinis I've ever had (lavender martini) and a fantastic meal. Wish we had known about this place when we planned our "meet the families" dinner - we had it at Amici, which was excellent as well, but Esca? Yummmm.
Serenity Salon and Day Spa, Wallingford CT: I found them by googling. I booked two spa packages only to find out my mom wanted in as well, and they totally accommodated us. The women there bent over backwards to make us feel comfortable and the service was top-notch. I wish I lived closer, because I'd make this my "home" spa. Plus they use a lot of earth-friendly products (bamboo brushes, vegan nail polish) - LOVED IT. They even gave us coupons as "first-timers," which we couldn't really use not being from the area - we gave these to the women at the front desk at the hotel!
Our DJ was also amazing - we went with Peter H. from Club T productions. We had seen him DJ before and loved his style, reassured that he would play the type of music that would keep the party going 'til the end of the night without leaving us with ringing ears (even my grandparents danced almost all night). He was FANTASTIC!
So that's that. Thanks for reading, hope this helps some of you Connecticut brides!
