When I saw that commercial I immediately said “this is going to piss a lot of racist bigoted people off”

This is a situation where I’m not happy about being right.

@OnceUponATime:  I honestly got a little tear-y eyed watching it. It was a beautiful message and reminder. There is no “right” type of American, or American family.

I want to say “how could anyone possibly be offended by people singing that song”, but I’m sure if I check my family’s posts on FB, at least one of them said something awful and bigoted…

Some people are awful.

The comments are pretty funny though. It was NOT the National Anthem. It was NOT God Bless America, nor was it written by Francis Scott Key. Yeah, they’re TRUE patriots!!

Wow, so I was reading through some of the tweets to see the response…and was SURPRISED to see this (and I admit I did not notice this either)…this is pretty cool! (sorry, copy and paste isn’t working on my mac so I’m rewriting…)

With all the noise on Twitter either applauding or criticizing the commercial, viewers might have missed this historic moment:

“Per GLAAD: The Coke commercial is the first time that a gay family has been included in a SuperBowl ad.”

@1inthechamber:  LOL.  Good point.

I come from an eclectic family and what makes me the most proud of my country is the diversity and variety of different cultures, and how we generally accept these differences (for the most part – please note I’m italian, and while I love my italian cousins they do NOT share love of immigrants and diversity and different cultures).

The idea that so many different cultures could love and sing a song about the beautyf of america is far more positive and uplifting than the idea that anyone who wishes to celebrate America needs to emerse themselves in “American” culture.

@Laur12:  It was a very quick scene of the two dads and child. I knew once I saw it there would be an outpoor of hate and homophobia.

Beautiful commercial. I thought it was such a wonderful representation of the various cultures that make this country what it is.

I loved the commercial!  It makes me laugh that so many of the hateful comments about “this is MERICA” called it the national anthem… that right there discredits you in my book.  Thanks but no thanks for your opinion!

I just don’t understand people not understanding that we were a nation built of immigrants! I fully embrace being American AND having German, Irish, Scotch-Irish heritage.

I thought the commercial was awesome, but I too knew that it would trigger an outpouring of hate, homophobia, and general assholery from the plethora of awful people on twitter.  So sad.
