We had our ceremony musicians (string quartet with trumpet) play the cocktail hour of our reception.
I also think your ipod idea would work, but just a word of advice - when you play music off an ipod, each song is a different volume and sometimes they can be drastic differences (where one song will come on blaring loud for some reason...). So be careful and make sure someone is monitoring the iPod for you!
Last night we booked our band and the wedding coordinator who wored with the bands and did 100s of great weddings (from the looks of it), said not to do much for cocktail. Most people don't notice unless it's supposed to be noticed (mariachi band, irish rovers, opera singer, etc...) She suggested to just have one performer. I was thinking about doing an ipod, but just make sure there are speakers available that you don't have to pay for. The wedding planner said most people are so busy chatting & grabbing drinks/eats that they don't notice much of anything at cocktail hr.
We had a harpist during our cocktail hour, it was very nice and wasnt so loud it interuppted guests conversations.

So we are having our ceremony and reception in the same ballroom, guests will just have to leave the ballroom and go into the foyer for cocktails while the room is set up for dinner. Our DJ is charging above $300 for an additional set up in this area for cocktail hour. I was just wondering what some of you other ladies did for music during cocktail hour? IPOD?
