How big is your wedding going to be? My parents are from the Elgin area, and I grew up in various western suburbs (Aurora, St. Charles, Elgin, etc). We live in the city now, but FSIL just got married at the Elgin country club and looked into quite a few other venues beforehand.
PS: welcome to the Hive! You'll get a lot of replies if you post this on the local boards, too.
Thanks for the welcome! We are thinking about 75 people. We live in Aurora. How do I post on the local boards, I thought I did? Oops!
We're not, but when we were talking with venues in the area, they would mention a cocktail/hors d's reception when we would tell them our budget. :P We're from Naperville and checked out a ton of venues nearby, so if you have any specific questions, I'd love to help out!
Cantigy in Wheaton/Winfield is beautiful but books up early for Saturdays in the summer. Also I'm not sure on the pricing...my sister had her reception there a few years ago and it was reasonable, but they've upped the prices considerably since then.
White Eagle golf in Naperville is also nice.
The suburbs are DEFINITELY cheaper than the city.
I would like to second Cantigny, and also suggest the Morton Arboretum, the Arrowhead Golf Club and the Wilder Mansion in Elmhurst. Good luck!
I thought of another one, I heard that Mason Sabika in Naperville does a great job with Tapas!
I looked at Meson Sabika. Their food is awesome but they are really expensive. I know I may be dreaming but we are trying to spend no more than $3500 for the reception. I will look at Cantigny, I didn't think about them! Has anyone looked at Payton's Roundhouse?
I think Payton's Roundhouse was kinda pricey when I looked into it (not sure about cocktails though). I would definitely check out the Wilder Mansion in Elmhurst. I remember the rental fee being really low and they use outside caterers so you don't have to deal with any food or beverage minimums. I really thought it was extremely reasonable and completely remodeled! I would of defintely had my reception there if I was doing a cocktail reception! Hope this helps : )
Thanks for the suggestion but Elmhurst is too far away. It would be almost an hour drive for us. 90% of both of our families are in the Montgomery/Aurora/Naperville area so we want to stick around here so most people can just get home easily instead of having to get hotel rooms, etc. I will definately check out your other suggestions though, thanks!! I forgot about Cantigny, that place is beautiful!
I previously lived in Montgomery, I have heard good things about Orchard Valley (off Orchard), it's a golf course with banquet facilities that offers luncheons, ect. They may do a drink and cocktail hour, I've heard it has beautiful scenic views. Like I said, I've never experienced it myself, but it may be worth a look.

Is anyone planning or has already had a cocktail/hors d'oeuvres reception in the western suburbs of Chicago? My fiance and I are starting the wedding talks and we are thinking of this as an option for two reasons. First being, we are hoping it will save us a considerable amount of money compared to a sit down dinner reception. Second reason being, I have been to a ton of weddings and the food always stinks. So why should we pay a ton of money for lousy food when it's not about the food anyway? Unless you pay a ton of money at a restaurant with a banquet area, wedding dinners are usually lousy. I would rather pay for appetizers and an open bar. So any suggestions or help would be great. Thanks!
