You are drinking coffee with too much acidity. You need to find other types of coffee and use real half-and-half to cut the acid.

I have a friend who has the same issue.  Coffee is pretty harsh on your stomach lining.  I have no solution, but you aren’t the only one!

Also, as you shop for varieties you like, don’t confuse acidity with boldness, roast level, strength, bitterness. These are all different things. Starbucks is pretty good about indicating acidity in the description of a lot of their coffees.

@Merinda1994:  DD coffee is something like 1 5.18 PH, which is pretty acidic.

My SO is the same way – coffee just goes straight through him!

I remember when I started to drink coffee, it would upset my stomach. But it was really a necessary evil for me and eventually my body got used to it. Whenever I don’t drink coffee for a few days (which doesn’t happen anymore!) and then have a cup, my stomach gets slightly upset.

I would suggest starting with a little bit and seeing if your body will get used to it. If that doesn’t work for you, there are a ton of other things like tea and hot chocolate that you can use for the Keurig!

@Merinda1994:  Look for a milder coffee. Folgers is good about labeling how dark their roasts are on the container (not sure if they lable on k-cup packages though?).

And I agree, using whole milk or 1/2 and 1/2 to cut the acidity.

I love coffee too and I would probably lose my mind if I got stomach aches from coffee!

Side note- do you drink any water before you have your coffee? I always drink a big glass of water first thing in the morning to rehydrate my body. This might help your tummy!

@Merinda1994:  I haven’t had that problem, but I do get heart palpitations if I drink too much (its that heart fluttering and anxiety feeling). It’s horrible and I hate it, so I try not to drink more than one cup max when I have some. I actually wound up switching to green tea most work days to avoid this.

@Merinda1994:  Yes, @mrsSonthebeach is right about the acidity levels! Definitely makes a huge difference. You can also try drinking a little after eating; sometimes it’s too harsh on an empty stomach. You could experiment with differnt brewing methods (drip coffee, Keurig, French press, and espresso will all taste and feel a little different).

Does anyone know if adding milk/creamer offsets the acidity, or does that just affect taste? I drink mine black and have a strong stomach, so I don’t really know enough to speak on that topic. But it might be worth a try, OP 🙂

Youre not alone, coffee really upsets my stomach and gives me horrible migraines. I don’t even like the smell of coffee shops anymore. I stick to green tea.

@Merinda1994:  I can’t ever have coffee. My stomache kills when I do (I have a really really bad stomache) so I stick to tea which has plenty of caffeine for me!!!

@MichiganGirl24:  Dark does not mean acidic. One of my favorite coffees, Starbuck’s Komodo Dragon, is dark but low in acidity.

@cutiebomb7789:  The milk fat in half and half (and full fat milk) will help, but not as much as using a coffee with a higher PH.

I had the same problem. Now I use Green Mountain Breakfast Blend k-cups and I don’t usually have a problem! FI could probably drink jet fuel and I just can’t do it. It kills my stomach.
