I know a lot of cold/flu medicines that were OTC were put behind the counter or taken off the market completely a few years ago. My problem is that I can't seem to find anything that works as well as the oldschool dayquil and nyquil.

Anybody have any recs as to what works well? (That's non-prescription). I'm just miserable. I got the behind-the-counter sudafed, but that didn't do a dang thing. :(

    Thanks y'all. :)

I hear zinc helps?  I've been taking it daily during the fall/winter for the past year or so, and I haven't really gotten sick.

I don't know that it actually works, just that I haven't gotten sick...

Desymil? It's simply a cough syrup, no fever/pain reliever.... but you stop coughing for 12 hours, and then you can add whatever ibuprophren you want.

I really like Aleve D cold and sinus. It helps with the stuffyness and won't make you drowsy.

If you have a cough or chest congestion, you can't go wrong with 44D.. it tastes nasty, but always works.

Also, anything with pseudophedrine-- which in some states, you have show your ID to get. (Damn meth labs!)

nyquil is the best.  The new one is definitely not as good as the old one...the took out some of the alcohol, i think... but it still works for me.  I usually just tough it out during the day so that I can load up on nyquil for a sound sleep.  I'm with hotchild though, I've taken tylenol cold and flu (non-drowsy) and that clogs me right up! :)  Good luck and feel better!!!

Sudafed just gives me cotton mouth and medicine head. I don't think anything works like Nyquil.

Have you heard Jay Mohr's bit about Nyquil? Here's his site in cse you need some laughs while you're home sick!  Go to the fan area> audio clips. Look for the one "Nyquil and Pot"

Thanks you guys. I just sent a laundry list of these things to my dear mother to pick up at CVS for me.

I know stupid meth people. I think even the behind the counter pseudoephedrine isn't as... I dunno, effective as it used to be. That used to be a never-fail for me, and this roundabout it just way fails.

Anything with PE (phenyleline?) (aka the OTC stuff they use instead of PSE) is just pointless to take imho.

Hopefully it won't move into my chest. Mucinex always works like a charm, but it makes my pee smell weird. (TMI, but true).

Do they sell BC Powder where you live? That stuff is awesome for headaches/body aches/ fever. You can't buy it here but I know it's sold all over the South. It tastes terrible but works super fast.

    Hope you feel better soon.

I've seen it before and also on some Nascar commercials (lol), but haven't ever tried it. It makes sense that it works way faster, well, because it's ground up and stuff. I didn't think about that. :p

Maybe I'll go grind up some aspirin.

Theraflu works fast for me like BC - b/c you drink it.  I prefer advil cold /flu to the Tylenol brand - also - my doc once told me to take both and stagger them every 3 hours (Tylenol cold, then advil cold) so you don't end up with that 1 hour kick in lag.

He did say though - only to do that when I was feeling my worst and after that drop back to the normal every 4 hours schedule.

Feel better fifty!  I had it last week.  :(  Now Mucinex is my friend LOL

Thanks. :) Hope the Mucinex gets it all out of your system!

I did the Afrin severe congestion spray plus sudafed, and I can breathe again, but I still have a killer headache. Can't win 'em all, I guess!

Ugh BC powder. GROSS. ME. OUT. Did it once and will never do it again! I can't even remember whether it got rid of my headache, because all I remember is the major gag factor when I poured it in my mouth. LOL

FI loves the stuff and uses it every time he has a headache though. To each their own!

It depends on your symptoms and what you want to alleviate.

Pseudoephedrine (behind the counter) products will attack your past nasal drip and dry things up.

    Acetaminophen/Ibuprofen are fever reducers

Guaifenisin is an expectorant and will make your mucus get thick and easier to expel.

    Dextromethorphan will also alleviate/quiet coughing.

Tylenol Cold or Theraflu. Although the Thera flu doesn't feel as potent as it did when I took it as a teen 9yrs ago. Iremember going out of state for a wedding and being knocked out with the stuff.lol

Mucinex works for me but it KNOCKS ME OUT! I'm very sensitive to medicine side effects, and the last time I took Mucinex I slept for 10 hours during the day, and then all that night. It was nuts. But most cold medicines do that to me to some extent, haha.

If you're willing to be sleeping for a while, NyQuil is always the best, IMO.

50, if I could, I'd send you some of the stuff I get here, the Chinese version of Tylenol Cold. That stuff is amazing. It's ... not the same as the American formula though, which makes me think it's probably not FDA approved. :)

(Incidently, I also get a slight buzz off it if I take the recommended dosage, but no signs of addiction yet ;P)

Zinc really helps for me, as well as wearing socks to bed. I know, home remedy, not meds, but I swear, it works!

Lol! That's some pretty intense OTC stuff it sounds like, ddw!

I just took Nyquil D (the BTC kind), and I can't feel my tongue. True story.

So sorry! I hate being sick but unable to sleep! A hot bath with Epsom salts or some cocoa might do the trick to get some ZZZZZZZs
